Holocaust Survivor Visits HGMS
Friday, April 8, Garcia Gladiators were privileged to meet Mrs. Rose Williams, Holocaust survivor. Her testimony of the events that took place leading up to and during WWII left an entire room of 8th graders speechless. Ms. Williams moved many people to tears while listening to her personal story. Some students commented on her courage and asked, “How she could speak of these things with such grace and without tears?”
She is an inspiration to us all, and she left us with some advice: show your loved ones how much you care about them; you never know what tomorrow may bring. Her most important piece of advice was this: Don’t be a bystander. Stand up against injustice. Speak up for those who can’t do it for themselves. And never give up.
When her own desire to survive was dwindling, she almost gave up; fortunately, she found the inner strength to go on and was eventually reunited with her brother and sister. If not for that, we never would have had the honor of meeting her and hearing her amazing story. Although her story occurred many years ago, it is in essence a story of determination, courage, and the resiliency of the human spirit, something all of us can relate to and learn from. Thank you, Thank you, Rose Williams, for your encouraging words, your unyielding forgiveness, and your message of hope.
Ask your Gladiator about this powerful presentation and how it ties into their ELA unit.

Purple Up! for Military Kids
April marks the nation’s Month of the Military Child. As a way to honor military youth affected by deployment, school district employees and students across the state are encouraged to wear purple on Friday, April 15, as part of “Purple Up! for Military Kids.”
Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, because it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.
The program is organized by Texas Operation: Military Kids (OMK) as part of the 4-H Youth Development program of Texas AgriLife Extension to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifice.

Teacher Appreciation Week
This is a friendly reminder from your HGMS PTA about Teacher Appreciation Week May 2-6. We want to make sure our teachers are recognized for all their hard work throughout the year. A small gesture is welcomed and means a great deal to our teachers. Feel free to send a gift card, hand written note, flowers, baked goods, etc. Please do not feel obligated to send something to every teacher your child has this year.
Thank you,
Diana Biasello
