Extended Campus Closures and Shelter-in-Place Amendment
Extended Campus Closures and Shelter-in-Place Amendment
Dear HCSD Families,
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, in a letter sent to county superintendents this afternoon (3/31/2020) states, "Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning."
I have attached Superintendent Thurmond's full letter to county superintendents below. This news, while not completely unexpected, was still a surprise to me and to many of my colleagues. We were not expecting to hear any update regarding possible extended campus closures until at least the middle of April.
I have much more to say but for now, I am processing this information with our educators. We are incredibly fortunate to have teaching staff who understand the need to connect deeply with their students while also supporting their academic needs during these challenging times.
Our campuses may be closed through the end of the school year, but that doesn't mean that we stop teaching and learning. As a matter of fact, it means we continue to reflect on our programs and determine how we can best serve our students and families through Distance Learning. We have the skills and we have the technology - we can do it and we can do it well!
I will send an additional update prior to Spring Break, please be on the lookout.
Shelter-in-Place Amendment
Please READ this update regarding the Order Amendment for Sheltering in Place.
The following is shared via the above link:
"The Health Officer of San Mateo County has issued a new, generally more restrictive Shelter-In-Place Order effective at 11:59 pm on March 31, 2020. You can find the order here.
This Order is in effect until May 3, 2020. Please be patient as we update the FAQs to reflect the new Order.
By 11:59 pm on April 2, 2020, all businesses permitted to continue operations are required to draft and post a Social Distancing Protocol at or near the business entrance that shall be easily viewable by the public and employees. Template available here: Social Distancing Protocol Template.
We are providing our interpretation of the County’s Order, which we believe is consistent with the Governor’s Order. Until and/or unless the Governor specifically indicates otherwise, the County’s Order applies when its directives are more restrictive than the Governor’s Order. If the Governor’s Order prohibits something the County’s Order allows, you should follow the Governor’s guidance."
Please take a deep breath and know we have this covered. We are learning too, but we have the very best educators taking care of your children and I have no doubts regarding the success of our Distance Learning program.
In good health and in partnership with you,
Louann
