Blanche Dodd Bobcat News
September 2019
Greetings Bobcat Families and welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are beyond excited to usher in our new Bobcat families to the newly branded Dodd Elementary. For many years, Dodd has served as the Intermediate School in Krum consisting of 4th and 5th grade students. With the growth that we have seen in our district and the projected growth we expect, our Board of Trustees approved the development of two elementary campuses to create fewer transitions between schools, provide more time for academic growth, and to facilitate the growing numbers of students in Krum. Our youngest students have already brought sheer joy and excitement to our campus and we look forward to allowing our older students to be companions and mentors for our youngest Bobcats!
We had an eventful first day of school!! As we lost electricity due to a storm, we began to welcome our students into "Flashlight Wednesday". However, instead of panic, we encountered calm and cheery teachers and families who helped our students make their way to their classrooms by flashlight. Thank you for your help and sense of humor during this power outage! In my thirty years of education, that day was definitely a first for me!
Our Dodd House System is going strong! We held our sorting ceremony on the first Friday of the year where each new student was sorted into one of six houses. The screams of joy as each house received their new members was overwhelming and exciting knowing that these students were destined to be team mates for the duration of their time at Dodd. Be sure to read more about our House System in this newsletter.
Again, I want to welcome you to Dodd Elementary where we are "Growing Excellence" on a daily basis!

Welcome to OUR House
The Dodd House System was established in 2018. The House System originated in England and is a traditional feature of English schools. This structure also applies to similar schools in the United States. The school is divided into subunits called “houses” and each student is assigned to one house at the moment of enrollment. The Dodd House System calls for EVERY student and staff member to be sorted into one of six houses. They will remain a member of the same house throughout their time at Dodd (2nd-5th grade). Blanche Dodd students are ALL Bobcats AND we are ALL learners. Each House name was selected from a different language meaning “learner”. Each House is also identified by a different color, mascot, and song. While all Houses are part of Blanche Dodd Elementary, each House really takes on a distinct identity of its own. We are truly “SIx Houses, One Family”. Click HERE to learn more about the Dodd House System.

Guidelines for Helping with Homework So You Don't Work Harder Than Your Child!
Set aside a time each day for family learning.
Set aside at least 30 minutes, devoted to "family brain cell development." During this time, there should be no TV, video games, computer games, etc.
Model your own excitement for learning by reading a book, writing letters, etc.
Your child may learn by doing their homework, reading about something they love, writing stories, etc.
Help only when your child truly wants it.
Some parents make the mistake of forcing help upon their kids. This only creates frustration, anger, and kids who believe they can't learn without their parents' help.
Help only when there's an absence of anger or frustration.
When either you or your child gets frustrated or angry, learning becomes associated with frustration and anger.
Help only when your child can describe what the teacher said.
This ensures that your child continues to believe that it's important to pay attention to teachers.
Unfortunately, some kids learn that it's best to "tune–out" at school and let their parents do all of the teaching at home.
Move away from your child before he/she "gets it."
Some children believe they can only learn something, or "get it," when an adult is in the same room…or is guiding them every inch of the way.
To prevent this dependency, avoid falling into the habit of sitting at the table as your child does their homework, especially when they are on the brink of learning something new.
THE CARDINAL RULE FOR HELPING: Never Work Harder Than Your Child.
People who are really successful implementing this skill purchased From Bad Grades to a Great Life!
