From the Counseling Office
Dear Brunswick Middle School Families:
The Brunswick Middle School Counseling Department is looking forward to a great school year!
My name is Kelly Mahn and I am the school counseling department chair and school counselor for all 6th graders and 7th graders with last names A-K. This is my 11th year as a school counselor at Brunswick Middle School. This year would have been my 12th year at BMS, but I was out on leave last year because I had fraternal twin boys in September. I am glad to be back. I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Butler University and have worked with middle and high school students with special needs.
Christine Akagi is our school counselor for all 8th graders and 7th graders with the last names L-Z. This is her 13th year with FCPS. Before coming to Brunswick Middle School, she was a school counselor at Middletown High School and Deer Crossing Elementary School. She holds a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, a Doctorate of Education in Leadership, the National Counselor Certification, and the National School Counselor Certification. In addition to counseling, she has taught at the middle school and high school levels and coached both cross country and track.
Amy Nelson is our Behavioral Support Specialist for all grades. She holds a Master's Degree in Social Work. She has been a licensed clinical social worker for 19 years. This is her 5th year working within a school. Prior to working in the school system she was an outpatient therapist working primarily with children and adolescents.
Chrissy Faron is our registrar. She has worked several years for FCPS in substitute positions as her children attended school in the district. This is her 5th official year with FCPS, having worked previously at Frederick Classical Charter School, Middletown High School and this will be her 3rd year with us here at BMS. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact her directly and if she is not able to help you she will make sure to direct you to someone who can in a timely manner.
Our department’s role is to collaborate with students, parents, teachers, administrators and the community to remove barriers to your child’s learning. We work to address the academic, personal/social and career needs of all students. Our ultimate goal is to enable all students to achieve success in school and to become responsible and productive members of our society.
We work with students through individual and group counseling, peer mediation, classroom school counseling lessons and transition activities. We collaborate with teachers and administrators by participating as a member of school improvement and interdisciplinary teams. We also serve as a consultant to teachers and parents by providing information regarding meeting student academic and emotional needs. In the community, we serve as a coordinator and manager of indirect services and act as a liaison between school and social services. Lastly, we partner with you, the parent/guardian, to best serve your child.
Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you and your child during the school year!

Health Room News
Frederick County Health Department / Frederick County Public Schools
Medication/Treatment Orders from your Health Care Provider
The appropriate medication/treatment authorization form(s) must be renewed at the beginning of each school year. Forms are available online at www.fcps.org or at your child’s school.
Please be aware of the expiration date on the pharmacy label when bringing the medication to the health room with the new authorization form. School health staff will determine medication expiration by the date printed on the pharmacy label. Note EpiPen’s, Diastat, Glucagon and inhalers have an expiration date printed on the container in addition to the pharmacy label. Therefore, the container expiration date must be equal to or exceed the expiration date on the pharmacy label. Please make sure the expiration date on the individual medication container exceeds the expiration date on the label before leaving the pharmacy.
School health staff will review these items for completeness and discuss any issues at this time. Please do not send your child to school with medications. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to arrange for the safe delivery of medication to the school health room; and the parent/guardian must bring medications and forms directly to School Health Staff per (FCPS reg 400-23).
News From Our Instructional Specialists
Ms. McFadden Media
Books have been flying off the shelves already this year! It is great to see so many BMS students reading! Many thanks to the BMS PTO for their generous donation of new graphic novels for our collection.
New books will be hitting the shelves soon. You can browse our collection by visiting the BMS Media website at https://education.fcps.org/bms/mediacenter at clicking on the red LS2 circle.
BMS is using the app Beanstack as a digital reading log. Think of it as a Fitbit for your brain! Students can access the Beanstack App through Clever, located on the BMS Media website. They can earn digital badges as they log their minutes read. We're working on the Reading Across Frederick County challenge this year!
Club signups are underway! Students can sign up on the media center webpage.
We are expanding our Makerspace area and we'd love to have some new materials. If you have crafting supplies, tinkering items, or sewing items sitting around, we would gladly give them a home!
If you have any questions about the many services the Media Center offers, have book suggestions, or want to volunteer to help shelve books or make displays, please contact heather.mcfadden@fcps.org

Extended Absences and Arrival
As a school community we value attendance and arriving to school on time. Every minute of the day is important to a student’s growth and development. Research has shown that a higher attendance pattern leads to higher success and achievement academically.
Remember! The BMS building opens at 7:30am and the school day begins at 8:00am. Please try your best to get your child to school so that students have a chance to go to their lockers, unpack, greet their teachers, view our brief morning announcements, and have a smooth start to their day.
If your family plans on taking your child out of school for an extended period of time, your child will be given 5 days of vacation time and the rest of the absences will be unlawful. Please contact the school in advance so work can be arranged for your child.
FCPS has a Transportation Delay Board that you can access easily when you wonder why your child's bus hasn't arrived yet.
Bus Delay will let you know!
This can also be found on the FCPS.org website under "Our Schools" tab. The Bus Delay link is on the right side under "Quick Links".
It updates often, so keep checking.
Find Out First
Have you been getting our Find Out First emails since school started? If not, please update your email with our front office so they we can ensure we have the right one in our system. This will then automatically update our FOF notifications.
