Happy Easter Everyone!
Our great PTO is sponsoring the Easter Egg Hunt again this year. The hunt takes place promptly at 1:00pm this Saturday, March 31. If you have been to a Tustumena Easter Egg Hunt before, you know that if you miss the start, you miss out. There will be about 2500 plastic eggs out on the playground (for the older students) and the soccer field (for little ones who need parent support) and these eggs are all vacuumed up within 10 minutes.
Our Kasilof Boys and Girls Club, Kasilof Public Library, and our own PTO are also sponsoring a bake sale during the Egg Hunt. This bake sale is to benefit the Boys and Girls Club and the Library so please come with a little extra cash and go home with all kinds of sweets. Thank you.

School Safety: Drills, Conversations, and Focus
School safety is a top priority in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. What to do before, during, and after a school emergency, weather related delay start, or school closure is important. KPBSD regularly practices safety drills in schools, and includes law enforcement in ALICE trainings for school emergencies. The District strives for continuous improvement in school safety.
Specifically, in the past several weeks:
KPBSD district office leadership held a mandatory meeting for all school administrators to discuss school safety. The candid conversation addressed preparation, drills, response to threats, school culture, mental health resources, legal and philosophical discussions about arming staff, what schools need from the district, and how to continue to create a safe culture for student learning.
Superintendent Dusek and Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones met with Borough Mayor Pierce and his Chief of Staff to discuss current safety concerns and items to be addressed. The result is the district and borough will work together to address concerns to meet the priority of safety in KPBSD schools.
Local law enforcement joined the Board of Education for a conversation about school safety prior to the March 5, 2018, school board meeting.
Additional meetings are scheduled, and district leadership continues to discuss school safety, needed resources, and responses.
School Safety Drills
Safety drills train our students and staff what to do in an emergency, identify areas of focus and additional training, and work with law enforcement to become familiar with schools and aid in an emergency response. In addition to fire and earthquake drills, a minimum of two drills each year are required to focus on emergency responses to an intruder or active shooter. In 2014, KPBSD instituted the ALICE protocol response districtwide, and invested in training for administrators and local law enforcement. This was a fundamental paradigm shift in response to the potential of an armed intruder.
