We Live the Word!
Friday, October 5, 2018
Dear Students, Families, & Friends,
On Wednesday, October 3, the faculty and staff of Father John V. Doyle School participated in a live safety skills training. This blended learning training began back in August with an online e-Learning course. The next step was our live simulation with ALICE Certified Instructors from the Coventry Police Department. Faculty and staff were able to enter the classroom Wednesday afternoon already prepared with foundational knowledge from the online portion of the training.
The safety training, ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate), provided preparation and a plan for faculty and staff on how to more proactively handle a threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. Faculty and staff who may find themselves in a violent, life threatening situation learned mental and physical strategies that could play a vital role in surviving a violent encounter under pressure. Options-based drills provided us with a range of alternative strategies to save lives, and the permission to use them, depending on the situation.
Father John V. Doyle School is entrusted each day to provide a safe learning environment for our students. Families expect schools to keep their children safe from all threats and emergencies. We are thankful to the team from the Coventry Police Department who worked with us to take steps to plan and prepare for such emergencies. No single response fits all situations; however making sure each of us is aware of options for response, and can react decisively, will save valuable time.
One of the highlights of our afternoon training was when Father Woolley successfully took down the intruder in one of the simulations! Way to go, Father Woolley!
