Betsy Ross
Born 1-1-1752 Died 1-30-1836
Childhood
Betsy was born into a Quaker(a type of religion) family. Betsy was the 8 of 17 children. Like her sisters she went to Quaker schools. She learned sewing and other common crafts. After she finished her schooling her father sent her to a local upholster, where at age 17 she met John Ross (see below picture).
John Ross
Betsy met John Ross at age 17, who was an Anglican. They quickly fell for one another, but Betsy was a Quaker and marrying someone out of someones religion was off limits, but she married him anyways. Betsy married John at age 20. Betsy and John made their own business where Betsy's needle work skills were needed.
Joseph Ashburn
One year later Betsy married Joseph Ashburn a sailor. He also met an unfortunate end, he was captured by the British and died in prison a year later.
John Claypoole
Last marriage was to John Claypoole. John met Betsy's husband in prison and that was how they met. He died 34 years later in 1817 after a long disability.
Impact on the War
When the war started Betsy and John's business slowed so John joined the militia. When he was guarding an ammunition catch he died from an explosion. In late May or early July she had a meeting with George Washington, George Ross, and Robert Morris witch led to the first making of the American flag.
