Reach for the Stars!
LIW Elementary, De Smet SD
Welcome Back!
It is a great feeling to have the school filled with children again! Mr. Wolkow does a terrific job cleaning, painting, and mowing to prepare for the first day. "Reach for the Stars" is the theme for our 2018-2019 school year. You may notice galaxy and outer space items in the hallways.
The major changes for the school year is our report card format for grades K-2 and the change to trimesters, instead of quarters. The new report cards will be much more informative and will list specific academic standards. This first year of implementation will be a pilot year so we will offer more information for parents and welcome any questions that you have! The trimesters will align better with our testing that occurs three times a year.
We will continue to have the buzzer system at the front doors of the school. The doors will be unlocked at 8:00am for students to enter the building in the mornings. During the winter months, this time will be adjusted to allow them to enter the building earlier.

School Attendance
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success, starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable. But we also know that when students miss too much school – regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your student is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent – which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year.
Research shows:
- Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
- By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
- By 9th grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.
Clearly, going to school regularly matters! Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:
- Make sure your student keeps a regular bedtime and establishes a morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Ensure your student goes to school every day unless he/she is truly sick.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your child feels anxious about going to school.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor or another parent to take your student to school.
Let us know how we can best support you and your student, as we want all of our students to be successful! If you have any questions or need more information, please contact the office.
