Counselor Connection
Bullying Prevention Month
Students will be taught the STOP-WALK-TALK model and will learn ways to be a "helpful bystander" by supporting the child that is being targeted or by getting an adult to intervene.
Students will also be taught the definition of bullying -- an intentional act of aggression, occurring in a relationship characterized by an imbalance of power, and is persistent or pervasive.
The three types of bullying listed below.
PHYSICAL Bullying means:
* Hitting, kicking, pushing (or threatening to do it!)
* Stealing, hiding, or ruining someone's posessions
* Making someone do something they don't want to do
VERBAL Bullying means:
* Name calling, teasing, or insulting
RELATIONAL Bullying means:
* Ignoring or excluding (such as from a group)
* Spreading rumors or gossip
* Making someone do things they don't want to do
Students in grades PK-5th are taught that when they encounter a bullying situation, the first thing they should do is tell that person to STOP in a firm voice. Students are encouraged to use an "I-Message" to tell the other person how their behavior is affecting them (i.e., "I feel _____ when _____. Please stop.")
Students are encouraged to WALK away from the situation and to go to a safe place where that person can not bother them.
Students are then taught to TALK to a trusted adult to get help.
How can you support National Bullying Prevention Month?
Listen to the morning announcements each morning for Bullying Prevention messages!
I have a large collection of writing prompts on bullying - please let me know if you would like these copied for you.
Watch Spookley the Square Pumpkin Video or put on the classroom play. You have to register at the following site, but it's free for educators. Please let me know if you decide to put on the play - I'd love to come watch and possibly have it recorded.
