My great-grandfather was a businessman in Wuhan, China. He was born in 1921 and attended a school in China. In his early 20's, he went to the city to become a businessman. He later opened several successful mechanic stores and became prosperous.
Wuhan, China (1930)
This is the neighborhood where my great-grandfather would have lived during his adult life. Being near the water, it was a center for trade and commerce. Called "Hankou", it literally means "the port".
Geographic Location of Wuhan
Wuhan is where my great-grandfather lived. The city is one of the largest by population in China and is one of the many economic centers of the entire nation. It is located in Eastern China.
Bicycles
My great-grandfather opened and owned several mechanic shops. People in China have almost always used the bicycle as a means of transportation, so he made a fortune through his shops.
Where did he fit in history?
Although the exact date of his birth is unknown, Jing Cheng Wei was born in 1921. During this year, World War I officially ended. However, earlier that year, the Chinese Communist Party was formed, and in 1949, when my great-grandfather was 28 years old, the People's Republic of China was founded. To the right is Chairman Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
What other events did he witness?
During his life in Wuhan, my grandfather would have probably witnessed several events. When he was 10, Japanese troops marched through the city and many businesses and people were forced to move while the military attacked. Later, when he was almost 30 years old, the first bridge across the Yangtze River was built.
Jing Cheng Wei's Life and Death
Jing Cheng Wei died in 2004, dying at the age of 83. He died in Wuhan, China, were he lived his entire life. He lived through both World Wars and the unification of his country into a Communist Republic. By learning about his life, I learned many things about history i would have otherwise not known.
