SCHOOL MENU CHANGES DUE TO NATIONWIDE FOOD DISRUPTIONS
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we are seeing nationwide disruptions to manufacturing, supply and distribution channels. You may have experienced this yourself while shopping online or in stores. This disruption also impacts school meals, as we navigate obtaining certain foods and supplies. Students may notice that we’re serving menu items that were not previously available or listed on menus.
While this situation is out of our control and something that school districts all across the country are experiencing, we are doing our best every day to come up with solutions to these challenges. We will continue serving our students a variety of nutritious foods, our menus will continue to be updated here as we see changes. Everything we serve will continue to meet nutrition guidelines set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). All schools that operate the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program must follow these guidelines. We will also continue to accommodate students with special dietary restrictions and allergies.
We remain committed to providing our students with the nutritious meals they need to grow and learn. We appreciate your patience and understanding. As a reminder, school meals are free for all students again this school year. If you have questions, please contact Julie Fortner, Food Services Supervisor at 248-956-3080.
VIEWFEST 2021: OCTOBER 9, 11 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Viewfest is a first of its kind, psychology-oriented community event that includes fun, engaging and impactful activities for children, teens and young adults. The event includes music, food trucks, arts and crafts, sports, community resources and a whole lot more. The festival will be highlighted by Viewspire’s Hug Buddy postcards as well as hosting a tribute center for those in our community who we have lost to suicide. The purpose of the event is to provide our community with mental health resources and support, but do so in a way that does not feel clinical. In fact, most attendees will not even realize that there is an underlying mental health narrative to the day. However, resources will be available as will other community members, peers and leaders.
SALUTE TO SERVICE GAME
Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Northern Football teams will be honoring United States Military personnel, veterans and first responders on Friday, October 15 at Walled Lake Northern. More than 75 first responders and military men and women will be recognized as players from each school will wear jerseys in their honor on the football field. Following the game, players will present their game-worn jerseys to each of the honored.
VOLUNTEER POLICY
As of Friday, October 1, parent volunteers once again have access to school buildings.
We are very proud of the relationship with our community and we know that our parents enjoy volunteering in our buildings. With this and low COVID-19 positive cases in mind for our district, volunteers may return to our buildings beginning October on a limited basis. Our principals will be notifying their communities with the process of allowing volunteers back in their buildings. All of our volunteers will be required to follow our policies related to mask usage. We look forward to having our parents back in our classrooms to support the educational needs of our children.

Our big celebration will take place Friday evening at our Annual Trunk or Treat. We do need parent volunteers to lead this fun event which has turned into our largest celebration of the school year.

VOLUNTEER UPDATE
Volunteers may return to our Walled Lake Schools beginning this month on a limited basis. Going back to last school year we have worked very hard in keeping our school open, and everyone healthy. While we are very excited to see volunteers back in our school, we want a well thought out plan that does not jeopardize the many things we’ve put in place to keep our children happy, safe and in school.
I ask that you please do not reach out to teachers at this time inquiring about volunteer opportunities. Our classroom teachers will contact parents about any future volunteer opportunities at the appropriate time.
Please contact me directly if you have any questions and/or concerns and thank you for your patience and support.
Thank you,
Nayal Maktari

PREVIOUS INFORMATION
PLE COVID-19 STUDENT SCREENING CHECKLIST AND NEXT STEPS
In an effort to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all of our students and staff we are requesting the support of all families in monitoring the health of our children.
In some ways we are experiencing the typical school year with students not feeling well. It is typical for students to experience a runny nose, headache, stomach ache, or a variety of other symptoms. However, we are also experiencing members of our school community who are testing positive with Covid-19.
We wanted to provide some guidance for our families on what steps to follow if your child is not feeling well.
- Step 1:
- Please use the Student Screening Checklist to determine if your child is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19
- If your child is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 based on the Student Screening Checklist, there are three options in order to return to school
- Please review this information and reference it in the event your child is not feeling well
- Step 2:
- Please contact our attendance line at 248-956-2890
- If your child did passes the Student Screening Checklist, please indicate that to our office staff.
- If your child did not pass the Student Screening Checklist, please let our staff know if you are getting your child tested, excluding for 10 days, or have an alternate diagnosis
Feel free to call us when in doubt with what to do. We would rather act cautiously then make a decision that could negatively impact your children, other children and the adults that work at Pleasant Lake Elementary.
Thank you for your support and don’t hesitate to contact our main office at 248.956.2800 if you have any questions and/or concerns.
HEALTH SCREENING BEFORE YOU COME TO SCHOOL
We continue to urge all families to check your child's health daily and make decisions that will help ensure we keep our students, staff, and community healthy and safe.
Daily Health Checks: Please check your child(ren) daily for ANY signs of illness before attending school. Check for the following symptoms:
- Fever/Chills
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
- Muscle of Body Aches
- Headache
- New loss of smell or taste
- Sore throat
- Congestion
- Runny Nose
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Diarrhea
If your child has any of these symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep them home until they are feeling better! We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe!

Kroger Community Rewards Program
The PTA needs your help in providing our students and staff with as many resources as possible. One way the PTA helps is by contributing the funds earned through the Kroger Community Rewards program. If you shop at Kroger, we ask you to enroll your card to earn money for the PTA. This program does not take away your rewards earned toward gas or any other benefits. It is an additional way that Kroger gives back to the community. If you were enrolled in the past, please make sure to re-enroll and select Pleasant Lake Elementary PTA to earn the community rewards. You can follow the link provided here https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow
Also, if you have other family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) that shop at Kroger or Kroger affiliated stores encourage them to enroll their rewards card and select your student’s PTA for community rewards. Every little bit helps our students and staff.
Thank you,
Katarina Gasevski
PTA Co-V.P. and Scrips Coordinator
Absences and Notes to School
If you intend to keep your child home on a school day for any reason, please use our attendance hotline at 248-956-2890. You may leave a voicemail message 24 hours a day. If we do not receive a call from you, we will call you to make sure that your child is indeed absent.
The Transportation Department will not issue bus passes for after school study, play dates etc. Bus passes will be issued for shared custody, day care, babysitting, or other emergencies. The Transportation Department will also issue year-long passes for in-district transfer and school of choice students when there is room on the bus.
If your child's transportation/dismissal for the end of the day changes in any way, please send in a note at the beginning of the day to your child's teacher or the office. If this changes during the school day, please call our secretaries before 3:00 p.m. We will always make sure your child gets to the correct place at the end of the day, but we ask for your help with this by notifying us early in the day or with a note. Thank you!
