The Odyssey
Book 9
Quotes
"Not a word in reply to that, the ruthless brute. Lurching up, he lunged out with his hands toward my men and snatching two at once, rapping them on the ground he knocked them dead like pups—their brains gushed out all over, soaked the floor— and ripping them limb from limb to fix his meal he bolted them down like a mountain-lion, left no scrap,
devoured entrails, flesh and bones, marrow and all!" (Homer 145)
-This shows that the Cyclops is ruthless and doesn't care about the Zeus threat that Odysseus made. Also how violent the Cyclopes are.
"We flung our arms to Zeus..." (Homer 145)
- This shows how much they rely on the gods and how they put all of their trust in them. Also the impact of the gods on the Greek culture.
"Nobody—that’s my name. Nobody—
so my mother and father call me, all my friends." (Homer 148)
This quote shows how Odysseus does really well in tough situations and how intelligent he is especially when he is needed by his men.
"‘Nobody? I’ll eat Nobody last of all his friends—
I’ll eat the others first! That’s my gift to you!" (Homer 148)
-This quote shows how stupid the Cyclopes are because they fell for Odysseus' trick. Also that they don't show mercy at all because his gift is that he will just eat him last.
