Tanner went to Meharry's Medical college and earn her medical degree in 1946.
She got a Internship from Harlem Hospital in New York.
She also did residency at the Unversity of Chicago she was the first African American to be accepted in the program.
She finally completed her residency at Meharry's Hubbard Hospital.

- In 1951 Tanner was the first African American fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
- . She also was the first African American boarded a certified pediatrician in Detroit, Michigan.
