Spotlight From the Field
Shane Yates
Shane Yates has worked in education for 12 years. He taught intermediate grades in the elementary setting for nine years. He is currently in his third year as an administrator for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) as the Director of Pre-K and Early Childhood. He believes all students can learn and that involves learning in various ways. He acknowledges the importance of teamwork from all staff members to create an environment that will allow all students to learn. Shane's BCSC Pre-K and Early Childhood Program currently has two Pre-K sites that receive funding from On My Way Pre-K. His program will add two additional sites for a total of four OMW Pre-K public school sites next year in Bartholomew County. He is always eager to learn and grow with his colleagues in early childhood education.
Shane was nominated by On My Way Pre-K Project Manager, Erica Woodward, who says:
"[Shane's] leadership has been pivotal as the school system, as well as the county, roll out OMW Pre-K for Bartholomew County parents. Shane works closely with the OMWPK Project Manager and the intake staff...to ensure that no child in Bartholomew County is ever left behind. He attends early education events with the Project Manager and is always willing to go above and beyond to be the voice of Pre-K in the region. He also has implemented many ideas involving OMWPK enrollment and attendance that we use in several preschool districts across the state. His passion and dedication to students, staff, parents and the community is admirable and his commitment for high-quality Pre-K is evident every day."
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to young children, Shane!

Spread the Word - Communication Practices
Did you know the average three year old has a spoken vocabulary of 1,000 words? Students with disabilities, like all students, must have the opportunity to fully participate in our public schools. A critical aspect of participation is communication with others. Three Federal laws – the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) (Title II), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) – address the obligations of public schools, including charter schools, to meet the communication needs of students with disabilities, but do so in different ways. It is appropriate for public schools to discuss considerations for assistive technology as early as the First Steps transition conference! For more information about communication practices, check out this Spread The Word!
