-free public elementary and secondary schools of choice that are operated by school districts.
-originated in the last 60's, still around today
Pros and Cons
Pros:
-greater parental involvement
-have the potential of providing motivation for students who have interest in the area the magnet school specializes in
-attract staff and administration who have an ideological bent for customized programs
social diversity may be increased
Cons:
-particular program is not conductive to family goals, children's learning styles, or ideological differences
-established as a bad idea or not managed while from time to time
-not always well defended when budget issues arise
