Mariner Minutes

Week of March 22nd

Principal's Message

This past week was an exciting week! As you know we have no school Monday the 22nd as school staff in Erie County received their second round vaccinations over the weekend. What an amazing thing. I also received news this week on some positive, very exciting STEM updates. Be on the lookout this week as I will post an update announcing those new exciting updates!

Enjoy the lovely weather today! I look forward to a wonderful week as we head into Easter break.

Adopting Baby Chicks

Kindergarten is working to incubate and hatch baby chicks over Easter Break and after. They are looking to find them a good home for once they hatch. If you are interested in adopting a baby chick...or a few, please reach out to Miss Mayer at

Spotlight Student Work

Really enjoyed watching 2nd grade learn about number arrays and then applying their new understanding to create their own number array by designing a house!
Preschool recently celebrated dinosaur dinosaurs! They blended their learning of shapes with art and created their own shape dinosaurs. Great activity and some cool looking dinos!
5th grade recently studied space and gained an understanding of the difference in comets, asteroids, and meteors (even meteorites). They did a great hands-on center-based activity analyzing the crater size and debris field of meteorite impacts based on mass of the meteorite. As part of the unit they created their own comets.

Coffee Chats with Mr. Mitchell

With registration opening and a new school year on the horizon, I want to give parents an opportunity to come in and share ideas, concerns, and questions regarding St. Mary School. On Thursday mornings, I will host small, socially distanced chat sessions in the school library. Space will be limited each week, but I plan to continue these sessions through at least the registration season and possibly through the end of the school year. If you are interested in attending, please complete the Coffee Chat Registration form. This link will be adjusted each week for new sessions.

When attending:

Please drop your child(ren) off as usual for school and park in the extra parking lot across from the parish office. Check in with Miss Settie between 8:25 and 8:30. Sessions will be in the library.

Please note that Covid-19 symptoms screening and mitigation efforts will be enforced. If you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid-19 please remain at home and look to sign up for a future session. Mask wearing will also be required.

EdChoice and EdChoice Expansion 2021-2022

EdChoice and EdChoice Expansion documents for both renewal and new requests are posted on the EdChoice Scholarship website, St. Mary School website, and in this newsletter.

Mission Jeans Day - Tuesday March 23rd

Mission Jeans Day is Tuesday the 23rd.

This month I was informed of a cause that one of our St. Mary School families is spearheading to help veterans in need. In an effort to help their cause, Operation: Baskets for Heroes, this month's Mission Jeans Day will be to help raise donation items to help homeless veterans in Northeast Ohio.

Items Requested for Donation:

Easter Candy

Amongst other items.

If you choose to send in items to help this cause it will be appreciated. We will also collect the usual donation for our mission child, Rony, if you choose to donate to the Mission Fund.

Thank you!

Parish-School Community Survey

The St. Mary Parish and School are looking for feedback regarding student, parent, and community experiences with St. Mary Parish and School. This feedback will help the Parish-School leadership develop future plans and address areas of need. Please take some time to complete the St. Mary School Community Survey. Thank you, we value your feedback!

Change of Routine

As a reminder, if you are sending a note/call regarding a change of routine (transportation, early dismissal) please provide details if it is a transportation change and/or involving students dismissing with another family. Thank you!

School Lunch Update *November 23rd Update*

The Free School Lunch program that was provided through the federal government has been extended through the school year. Please reference the flyer for further information.

Symptoms and Quarantine Information Update

Erie County Board of Health has provided some updated information regarding quarantines and what to do following a COVID-19 test and/or positive result. Please read these to become familiar with those updated guidelines.

Attached is a document which gives instructions and guidelines in relation to quarantining. This is a reference guide for future reference.

Also attached here is a daily symptoms checklist provided by the Erie County Health Department. This document also provides the most up-to-date guidelines regarding symptoms and how to proceed with presence of listed symptoms. Please carefully look it over and please use this as a reference each morning.

Temperature and Symptoms Checks Reminder

Please continue practicing temperature and symptoms checks EVERY morning in order to ensure our students, staff, and families remain safe. If the temperature is 100.0F or higher and/or Covid-19 symptoms are present (symptoms list in the plan) the student, as well as siblings, needs to remain home. Please ensure consistency with following this policy!

If you have questions regarding symptoms, quarantines, or other Covid-19 related areas, please feel free to contact Mr. Mitchell or the Erie County Health Department.

Masks and Hygiene

The Ohio Department of Health issued a mask mandate for all students K-12 for the 2020-2021 school year. St. Mary School will require masks in accordance with the state mandate as well as for the preschool (please reference preschool update in this newsletter for further guidance). Parents, please begin to work with your children on wearing masks properly and becoming comfortable wearing them.

Update: students may wear the gaiter scarf type face coverings, although the cloth masks are recommended.

Also, please practice proper hygiene as well. Please visit for guidelines.

If there are any questions regarding face coverings, please contact Mr. Mitchell at
