Skype a Scientist
Mrs. Haynes at Fernandina Beach Middle participated in a program called Skype a Scientist. We were paired with an oceanographer who taught us how she studies ocean phytoplankton. She shared with us two trips she has taken to Alaska and Antarctica. We learned about the Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CDT) instrument used to collect water at varying depths for the experiments she performs. She taught us how she could take pictures of the watercolor with a special camera and computer to test the cleanliness of the water and the amount of phytoplankton in the water. We saw pictures of the vessels she traveled on, the labs she set up on the vessels, the marine life she saw on her trips, and much more. Then she opened it up to the students to ask questions. We will participate in this program again. The program is free to all educators. They tailor the program to the age group involved. Turkey Hideouts
Southside Elementary students were building Turkey Hideouts in Steam Lab. First, students watched a science video that gave us facts about turkeys. Then they made their structures. I. Ultimately, they had to add a show where the turkeys were hidden.
Pumpkin Book Character
Mrs. Crowder’s first-grade students completed a pumpkin book report. This was a family project for October. Students created a book character using a pumpkin and wrote about their nature. The whole family was asked to join in on the fun!
"Heroes Don't Always Wear Capes"
Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points class has been working on a unit called "Heroes Don't Always Wear Capes." They have discussed the importance of the military, police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, emergency people, and their own personal heroes. The students wrote letters to police officers, and our resource officer, Officer Arseneau, arranged a surprise visit from her fellow officers so the students could meet them, thank them, and personally give them their letters. What a special treat! Thank you, FBPD and Officer Arseneau.
