Parent Peek at the Week
Week of October 21st, 2019
In case you missed it.....
What's happening at KH?
Election time is here
C'est fantastique!
Some important information for this week....
Front Lot Parking
Thank you to all our parents who are making use of Kawartha Heights Blvd, particularly in the morning drop off, to let student out and climb the stairs to the front door. A reminder that our parking lot is not accessible for drop offs/pick ups due to the limited number of spaces reserved for staff only. A new sign is on the way and will be posted soon as a reminder for all. Thank you for your support in allowing staff to park and get into school to start working hard each and every day.
Did you know......Progress Reports
It's hard to believe but Progress Reports are just around the corner. For our youngest friends in Kindergarten, this is a short document called "Key Learnings" that focuses on what your child's key new learning has been in the first few months of school. For students in Grades 1 - 6, you will be receiving a Progress Report that focuses on Learning Skills and how well each child is progressing in the academic areas (this is identified with Progressing Very Well (PVW), Progressing Well (PW) and Progressing With Difficulty (PWD)). It's important to note that November is a time when we are still assessing students, and the first formal evaluation (with grades) isn't until February. You can look for the Key Learnings and Progress Reports to be sent home on November 8th, 2019.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Following the receipt of Progress Reports, you will be contacted by your child's teacher to set up an interview time. This is the one time of the year when we try to meet with every parent to discuss the successes, challenges and next steps coming out of the first few months of school. When the interview letter comes home, please return at your earliest convenience so we can set up our interview schedule in a timely fashion. We look forward to seeing you for these important discussions!
In case you missed it last week....Flipgive
We are thrilled to announce a way you can support our school year round - with things you already buy and use! School Council wants to make fundraising efforts for KHPS easy by using an online service called FlipGive.
FlipGive is a team funding app/website that gives the school cash back for the things you’re already buying, at no additional cost to you. You can earn money for the school when you purchase things like groceries, books, coffee, hotel stays, dining out, gas etc. FlipGive is absolutely free to use, and the school gets every penny that our team earns!
Very simply, you join our team on FlipGive (directions below) and then start all your online shopping through our team page. With FlipGive, our school raises money every time you shop with hundreds of popular brands like Amazon.ca, Starbucks, Indigo, Sportchek, Walmart and Esso.
Join our team now using our invite code VBGFCR (or search for Kawartha Heights at https://www.flipgive.com/teams) in one of 2 ways:
1. Download the FlipGive app at https://www.flipgive.com/app?joincode=VBGFCR
2. Join online at https://www.flipgive.com/teams/join?fundraiser_name=Kawartha+Heights+Public+School&joincode=VBGFCR
Remember to use FlipGive before you shop online so we'll earn cash back. And, if you join and make a purchase within the first 14 days we'll receive a $5 bonus! You can even double down on fundraising with some vendors by using FlipGive to purchase an electronic gift card, and then going through the app/website to make your online purchase and use your gift card as the payment method!
FlipGive offers some additional features that can help our team earn as much as possible. The FlipGive App lets you know when you’re near a store or restaurant offering cash back so you won't miss out. Many supporters forget to start their shopping at FlipGive.com and miss out on cash back. FlipGive Max is a browser extension that can be used on your desktop computer. Max alerts you of earnings when you visit participating brands and search via Google, Bing or Yahoo. Max remembers, so you don’t have to.
We’ve only listed a few examples, but the earning opportunities are endless. Gifts for holidays, teachers, gift cards, birthday parties, car rentals, sporting equipment - you name it. We’re very excited about this new fundraising opportunity, and look forward to having you join our team!
Thank you,
Your KHPS School Council
School Improvement Plan
As mentioned previously, our entire school focuses on the same area of math at the same time each day. Right now, we are entering our second week of learning more about Geometry and Spatial Sense. For some families, supporting math at home might feel daunting, but never fear! Each week (often several times a week) we have Bedtime Math challenges posted on our Twitter feed for younger students, and this week will be starting "Math in the News" posts for our older students. These are fun, short math experiences that you can complete as a family. Even once a week, why not try these together? You may be surprised how much fun a little family math can be!
Upcoming Dates to Keep in Mind...
October 28th - Headlice Check for the full school
October 31st - Mrs.Rees' class to Outdoor Education
October 31st - Judging for the Halloween Door Decorating Contest
November 8th - Progress Reports are sent home
Just one more thing.....
