Union Canal Connection
February 2021
From The Principals Desk
If the snow would stop and we can make it through the rest of the cold with no precipitation then we would be running as normal as can be! January was quick and we are all thankful that Covid-19 is keeping its distance from Union Canal so we can continue on with this year’s normal school activity. You may always view district information about Covid-19 Cases on the district website dashboard found here. Currently we are operating school safely under the guidance of PDE, PADoH, and CDC guidelines.
We have had our first snow day and snow “make-up” day of the year. This make-up day was offered virtually with asynchronous instruction. The feedback on the day from both community members and staff was that the make-up day, virtually and asynchronous was a success. In the future, Union Canal and the Cornwall-Lebanon School District may continue with some days like this, pending situation and calendar dates. As of now there are still two snow makeup dates that need to be fulfilled for the snow that caused us to miss school on February 1 and 2. At this time the first snow make-up day will be an in-person learning day (regular school day) on Monday February 15, 2021. The second snow make-up day will be an in-person learning day (regular school day) as well on Wednesday March 31, 2021.
As of now PDE is still planning on having PSSA assessments to be given in grades 3-8. Please note that our PSSA testing schedule has changed and will now take place on the below dates:
Spring 2021 PSSA Testing Schedule
English Language Arts Grades 3-5: April 20, 21, 22
Mathematics Grades 3-5: April 26, 27
Science Grade 4: April 28, 29
All students will be completing these assessments in class via computer.
As a school this past month we held a virtual assembly to discuss Acceptance and Diversity as well as honor the students of the month that exemplified perseverance. You may view the assembly that the students watched in class here.
Student technology devices have been rolled out to all students whose guardians that they do not have a technological device available to them to use at home. Not only do we want to ensure that our elementary students are prepared to access their classes online in case of a move to a virtual learning day, these devices may be used at home to further learn outside of the school day. Feel free to have your child access their educational applications using technology at home. A good place to start is by going to our k-5 Falcons Technology Hub. From here students may access all of their technology applications.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our students. At anytime if there is anything that we can do for you please do not hesitate to contact us at school.
Yours In Education,
Bernard J. McGinty III

Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration involves three steps. The first step is to complete an enrollment application online. When we receive your application, we will send you an email with more information about the next steps in the process. The final step is scheduling an in-person kindergarten registration appointment at the District office.
Step 1 – Online Account & Kindergarten Enrollment Application
If this is your first child to be enrolled in the school district, you will complete a short web form to create an online Skyward Family Access account. After creating your account, you will receive an automated email asking you to complete the kindergarten enrollment application. Please complete and submit the application to continue the registration process.
If you have a student currently enrolled in the school district, please log into your Skyward Family Access and click the “Online Student Registration” button on the left navigation menu to start the enrollment process.
Step 2 – Registration
At registration, you will be meeting in person with school district registration personnel to review enrollment papers. The registration process will take place at the Cornwall-Lebanon School District Office, 105 E. Evergreen Road, Lebanon, PA, 17042. You will receive an email with a link to schedule your appointment.
Please bring the following to THIS appointment:
- Your child’s immunization record
- Your child’s birth certificate
- Proof of residency (bring one of the following: Deed, Lease Agreement, Mortgage Statement or Property Tax Statement)
Additional forms that will be needed to complete your child’s registration:
- Physical Form

- If applicable: Custody order, CLSD-approved guardianship form, CLSD-approved shared housing form. NOTE: Cornwall-Lebanon School District Guardianship Affidavits and Shared Housing Affidavits, available at the District office, must be submitted and approved prior to the start of the school year.
Step 3 – Kindergarten Parent Orientation
Parent Orientation will be held virtually for the 2021-2022 school year. Viewing this presentation will allow you to learn about the kindergarten program at Cornwall-Lebanon School District and “meet” some of the staff in your child’s assigned building.
Kids n Kops Lunches
During the months of January, February, March and April, students in grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 have the opportunity to attend lunch here a t U.C. with Mr. McGinty and a North Lebanon Police Officer. McDonalds in Myerstown provides the lunch. The students can ask the police officer questions about the job and their experiences.. The student is chosen (1 boy and 1 girl from each class room) based on “The 3 A’s” positive attitude, a satisfactory attendance record, and academic achievement during the school year. The photograph below shows the students who had lunch during the January luncheon with Mr. McGinty and Officer Ryan. Autumn Barr, Wainder Torres, Olivia Pellicia, Phong Huynh, T.J. Monthly Character Traits
Perseverance
Each month Union Canal recognizes a student from each class room who best represents the chosen character trait for that given month. The character traits are "Respect, Kindness/Courtesy, Self-Discipline, Friendship, Perseverance, Acceptance, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring". The student is given a certificate and a t-shirt during a special assembly to note the importance of displaying this character trait.
