Communication Crew Update

The GISD Navigators Communication Crew has been working to create and disseminate various tools that communicate to all staff our organization’s mission of leadership, service, innovation – partnering for success. The crew’s goal is for all staff to know those six powerful words, and to understand how they can identify with, and contribute to, GISD’s mission through the services they provide to students, parents, and educators every day.

Recently, “pop quizzes” have been conducted by the Communications Crew as one way to increase the broad-based organizational knowledge of our mission. Essentially, the crew is using the quizzes to not only remind staff of our mission, but to also gain an understanding of the percentage of staff members who currently know it. The goal is for 100% of our staff to be able to recite the mission statement by the end of this school year! There will be several opportunities to participate in quizzes over the next few months and those who pass the quiz are rewarded with an incentive. The Communications Crew is also in the process of acquiring additional reward incentives, such as lanyards, pens, and sticky note pads that contain the mission statement.

Meanwhile, keep cramming for your pop quiz by rehearsing the mission statement and reflecting on what those six words mean to you in your daily work. Helpful hint: the mission statement regularly appears on many GISD publications, including PayDay Note, InnerViews, and most recently on computer screensavers throughout the district.

Students Participate in Braille Challenge

On February 28, four students from Genesee County participated in the Regional Braille Challenge competition at Oakland Schools. This is the first step to the National Competition in California. The day of competition started very early in the morning with GISD special education staff members, Megan Pidgeon and Crystal Yachcik, picking up the students for the trip to Pontiac. During the competition, students were split into grade appropriate groups and competed in spelling, reading comprehension, proofreading, graphs and charts, and speed and accuracy tests. All students went home with shirts and goodie bags containing approximately $25 worth of braille Uno cards and gift certificates for Amazon and Seedlings Braille Books. A lunch out also gave students additional time to socialize and work on their restaurant skills.

Students Compete in Welding Competition

Top performing students in Ms. Lanczynski’s 1st session, 1st year welding class at the Genesee Career Institute recently participated in three categories at a Skills USA competition held at Delta college. Students Cody Wiggins, Jarrett Maize, Kyle Parsons, and T.J. Scott competed in various categories. Kyle Parsons took 2nd place in the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding category. Ms. Lanczynski reports that all four students performed skillfully and gave serious competition to even their 2nd year adversaries. She was especially impressed with the top notch performance of the students, considering they had only two days to practice because of school closings due to inclement weather.

Telling Our Story

Episodes from the Telling Our Story video that debuted at the Fall Workshop are being periodically added to the GISD website, so all staff have the opportunity to see these great stories again. Check out the newest addition, A Story of Opportunity, here.
