WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM??
- Homework: Students need to complete their homework bingo sheet and math problem on the back. Please have your child return their completed homework in their orange folder on Friday. Link to this week's homework page is above.
- Innovation: Students will continue working on a project of their choice to show their learning about their animal they have been researching. Some options include: creating a google sites, making a poster board, creating a game board or making a coding game on Scratch.
- ELA/Language Arts -We will be finishing up Unit 3: Animal Adaptations. We will look back to the essential question, How do Living Things Adapt to Change? Students will finish this week by reading about a penguin, octopus and camel's adaptations that allow them to survive in their habitats. The reading skills we will be focusing on are finding evidence to answer questions about a text, making inferences about causes and effects and comparing and contrasting texts on the same topic. (Unit 3 Parent Letter)
- Math -Unit 2 concepts of multiplication and division. We are coming to the end of our first multiplication and division unit. We will be reviewing the different concepts related to multiplication and division and begin to prepare for our unit 2 test. We will take our test the week of November 18th before Thanksgiving break (Unit 2 Parent Letter). Continue to practice multiplication and division problems at home so students can continue to build their fluency with their facts.
- Writing -Students will use their research they have collected to write a report about all of the different features of their animal. Students are typing this report on google docs.
- Spelling- Closed Syllable Pattern! A closed syllable is when the vowel sound is short and the syllable ends in a consonant. Check out this short video explaining closed vs. open syllables. Look at the word oc/to/pus: the first and third syllables are closed because they make the short vowel sound and end with a consonant. Students will use their understanding of closed syllables to spell and read multisyllabic words. Spelling words: Black, Sticky, Munching, Suddenly, Quickly, Blended, Better & Predators.
- Vocabulary- Students will be able to use reference materials and context clues in a text to build their vocabulary. They will show their understanding of the words by using them in a sentence during collaborative conversations and in their writing. Our vocab words for the unit include determines, detect, environment, excess, exterior, moist, shed, survive, formulate and durable.
- 7 Habits - Habit of the Month: Habit 2-Begin with the End in Mind. In third grade students are building their independence and often given choice in how they will get their work done. For example, during reading group time, students do not go to designated rotations. When they are not working with a teacher, they have a list of work they need to get done for the week and need to make a plan on how they will get it done by Friday. How can students begin with the end in mind at home? Please share anything exciting at home that students are doing to apply this habit to their daily lives!!
