The Core Sound Estuary Informantion
The Core Sound is a large and shallow body of water in eastern NC located between the mainland of Carteret county and Core banks, part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, located west of the Atlantic ocean and west of Bogue sound.
Estuaries are important because they provide a nursery for the larval forms of some marine fish species, and provide shelter and food for many young and adult fish and shellfish. Estuaries are also the beneficiaries of energy subsidies through the tidal transport of food and nutrients and removal of wastes.
Mud shrimp, cutthroat trout, snails, aquatic plants, and spike grass are all found in the Core Sound estuary.
The Atlantic Ocean, Thorofare bay, and White Oak River all feed the Core Sound estuary.
