NATIONAL BOARD SUPPORT PROGRAM - 2016

The following is information on opportunities for current National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) to become involved in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools National Board Support Program. The support program is designed to promote and assist candidates seeking certification, and NBCTs are needed to contribute and serve as leaders by sharing their expertise and enthusiasm as mentors or ambassadors.

The National Board Certification process is a professional growth opportunity that lends itself to collaboration with other professionals. The mentor is a teacher who has successfully been through the process and has extensive knowledge of the National Board Certification Standards and Core Propositions. Mentors receive a stipend as compensation for time spent with candidates. Responsibilities of the mentor include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Scheduling, designing and documenting meetings with candidates that promote thoughtful reflection and prepare the candidate(s) for the process involved in the National Board components.
  • Becoming familiar with the candidates’ certificate area standards, portfolio requirements and scoring guide in order to provide feedback to the candidate.
  • Demonstrating professionalism and integrity, especially in terms of maintaining confidentiality and following ethical guidelines.

Current NBCTs interested in serving as a mentor for candidates pursuing National Board Certification must first complete an application, which includes a principal recommendation. This application may be found on the Forms menu on VBCPS.com, under Professional Growth and Innovation. Applications are due by June 10. Selected mentors will participate in training that will take place on June 30 from 1-4 p.m., July 25 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., or Aug. 2 from 1-4 p.m. at Plaza Annex, Room 22. Participants will receive workshop pay and license renewal points for the training. If NBCTs are current Candidate Support Providers, then they are not required to attend this training but may choose to attend as a refresher.

Teachers may also choose to become an NBCT Ambassador, which provides NBCTs an opportunity to promote the National Board program without the ongoing time commitment of mentoring. Current NBCTs interested in serving as an ambassador must complete the application, which includes a principal recommendation. The application may be found on the Forms menu on VBCPS.com, under Professional Growth and Innovation. Applications for the NBCT Ambassador program are accepted on an ongoing basis. The expectations are as follows:

  • Promote the National Board Certification Program by hosting an informational session at your school. Materials will be provided.
  • Support National Board Certification by answering questions about your journey and the benefits of certification to potential candidates.

Thank you for helping to sustain and expand the National Board Support Program by providing information regarding the mentoring training and ambassador program to current NBCTs on your staff. Questions may be directed to Sarah Payne, professional learning specialist, in the Office of Professional Growth and Innovation at 263-6972 or Sarah.Payne@vbschools.com.
