WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 15, 2016
Hello Friends and Families of FSA...
It's hard to believe that the first week of school is now over; our students are settling into their new schedules nicely. We celebrated this past weekend with two separate welcome picnics hosted by our FSA faculty. It was such a joy to see so many of our families gathered together and getting to know one another better.
I would also like to thank you for your patience and understanding last week during our dismissal procedures. It is hard to believe that our school has grown by more than 30% in just one year with 160 new students. We appreciate your full support as we make ongoing adjustments to accommodate our exciting growth.
Please be assured that the safety of our students is our paramount concern. For this reason, we kindly ask that you please adhere to the carpool rules and regulations that have been distributed this week via email. Additionally, please keep our front desk/lobby area clear of visitors during our dismissal period. We expect our carpool to move more quickly this week as we begin two separate dismissal times.
MAP testing began this week and will provide a wonderful baseline of information to help our teachers prepare lesson plans and teaching strategies to best accomodate your child. Additional information on the MAP testing program is included below.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank you for taking time to read our weekly newsletters. They are full of important information, details and deadlines. There are so many exciting things happening within your school; we don't want you to miss a single detail!
Gratefully,
Kenan Sener
Principal

MAP Testing Commences This Week
What is the purpose of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment?
MAP is a norm-referenced measure of student growth over time. MAP assessments, when joined with other data points, provide detailed, actionable data about where each child is on his or her unique learning path. This data is then utilized by our teachers to help create the best possible educational plan to help your child.
MAP assessments differ from other data sources because the assessments are nationally normed. Additionally, the program scores student progress throughout the year and across school years. Lastly, the MAP is linked to software tools which can assist teachers and administrators in planning and instruction.
What are the uses of MAP?
MAP tests are based on a continuum of skills in Mathematics and Reading ranging from low skill levels to high skill levels. MAP assessments help teachers identify the instructional level of the student and also provide context for determining where each student is performing in relation to local or state standards and national norms. MAP reports allow teachers to better target instruction based on students’ strengths and needs.
(Please note: portions of the MAP testing explanations were extrapolated from various online sources.)

Summer Reading Reward
We are very proud of our FSA students who completed their Summer Reading assignments! We hope these students enjoyed diving into some good books and writing descriptive summaries about the books they completed. As a reward, students who successfully completed their summer reading assignments and turned these into their Language Arts or Homeroom teacher will be awarded a dress down day and a popsicle party on Friday, August 19th.
Way to go FSA students!
Student Spotlight - Meet Ellie P!
Fulton Science Academy Private School would like to welcome Ellie P., a new fourth grade student who shares not only a passion for learning, but also a love for the performing arts. Ellie has been dancing and performing since the age of five.
After her school day concludes, Ellie heads straight over to RISPA, the Renaissance Institute School for the Performing Arts, also in Alpharetta, for hours of intensive training in seven different competitive companies! Ellie trains daily in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern, Acrobatics, Acting, Musical Theater and also takes private voice lessons. Wow!
Clearly, Ellie's hard work and dedication is paying off. Recently, she won the title of “Best All Star Dancer” at the 2016 Access Broadway Competition held in Atlanta. She also won a “Broadway Star” at the National Access Broadway Competition for a Hip Hop duet last year. Ellie has had acting experience in a commercial and in educational instruction videos shown around the world.
When asked about her future goals, Ellie's answers were grand, just like her joyful personality.
1. To become the President of the United States;
2. To become a Chemist' and
3. To become an Actress in film and on Broadway
Welcome to Fulton Science Academy Private School, Ellie! We hope we can count on seeing you this year in our Talent Show and are so happy that you are now a Mustang!
(If you would like to have your child featured in an upcoming, "Student Spotlight," please email information about your child and a photo to mbowman@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!)
2016 - 2017 AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS BEGIN THIS WEEK

FSA HOME VISITS BRING SMILES
At FSAPS, we embrace every opportunity to learn as much as we can about our students. One way we achieve this is through personalized home visits with interested families. This program is entirely voluntary but has been very favorably received by those who have participated in past years. One parent said...
"My husband and I were blown away that three of our daughter's teachers came to visit us on a Sunday afternoon. The world often operates at a hectic pace, and you could visibly see in our daughter's eyes how much it meant to her to have her two main groups of role models - her parents and her teachers - come together for an entire afternoon of time dedicated just to her. Switching our daughter into this school has been the best decision we ever made...your compassion and dedication to what is in the best interest of each individual child is extraordinary. Please keep up the great work!" - New FSAPS Parent - Fall 2015
Our teachers visit with interested families because they enjoy it, but research also shows that personalized interaction with a student’s family at his/her home can be a very effective way to help boost a child's academic and personal growth. We agree.
How Can You Schedule a Home Visit?
The process is actually very simple. Please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal, at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org. In that email, please provide three available dates for your child's home visit. We will get back to you and confirm a date. At least two teachers will attend home visits; specific names/subjects will be dependent upon teacher availability.
For any questions you have about this program, please send an e-mail to junal@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Please note: the best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 p.m., and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings.
Dismissal Reminders
Please be informed that student pick-up is not allowed from the front office between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. All families are required to follow the dismissal instructions described HERE to pick up their children. If you miss our 3:30 p.m. dismissal, please wait until the 4:20 p.m. dismissal to pick up your child, our teachers prepare for clubs and ask that we do not interrupt them. We kindly request that any families who have doctor appointments or other commitments please plan to pick up your child from the front lobby prior to 3:00 p.m.
Replacement Carpool Cards Available
Please help show your school spirit by purchasing customized spirit wear that shows your Mustang pride! Shirts are available in both children's and adult sizes! Students will have an opportunity to wear their spirit wear during dress down days, and on Fridays.

GRAPHIC DESIGNERS WANTED...
GREAT NEWS! INTRODUCING EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES
As part of our ongoing quest to make our school a leading STEAM institution in the region, we have been discussing ways to improve the music and computer/coding programs. We are pleased to report that as part of our school improvement plan for the 2016 - 2017 school year, we will now offer early morning music and coding classes. To best support this new initiative, we have added two additional faculty members to our school. These talented staff members include our new orchestra teacher, Dr. Hawk, and our new computer teacher, Ms. Ertekin.
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes. These optional classes will begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
Alex Haley once wrote, "Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children."

APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
