Staff Update

Monday, December 7th - Friday, December 11th

Thank You

Thanks to all of you for making the Celebrate Compass event so special. Thank you for gathering student work, helping your students create some special Celebrate Compass projects, contributing to the beautiful video that captures our school, and for your presence at the event on Thursday. We don't have an exact number for how much we raised yet, but we do know that we raised more money than last year! It will be exciting to talk about the possibilities of creating inquiry experiences in the future. We very much appreciate all of the work you do to teach and support our children each day and are so glad to have each and every one of you with us, creating this new school.

This Week's Events

This Week's Music Classes

Sara unfortunately was not cleared to return to work on Monday and will not be returning for another two weeks. Because Amy had to return to her other school placement by December 7th, we have hired a new substitute to cover Sara's classes. Alex Kramer, music teacher and Sara's brother-in-law, will be covering the classes. We know that the kids may be expecting Sara to be back due to it being Amy's last day on Friday, so please let your children know of this change in plans.

Alex will start tomorrow and we will tour him around in the morning and stop by to say hello to you all and briefly to the classes. Thanks to all of you for your support and flexibility in the past weeks. Sara, we are all sending you good healing vibes!

Wednesday Professional Development and Grade Level Meeting Agendas

We will send out the agenda for Wednesday planning and PD on Monday afternoon. Please make sure that your agendas are uploaded to Drive by Monday so we can schedule specialist time. Thanks!

Staff Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 22nd

Our holiday party will be at the Emerson Bar on Tuesday, December 22nd after our professional development day. Staff members are welcome to bring a guest! More details to come in the coming weeks.

Holiday Gift Drive

No pressure to participate, but if you'd like to contribute to our annual gift drive, here is the info. Thanks Amanda for organizing!:

Our annual Sponsor-A-Family Holiday Gift Drive is here! This is an initiative where all three schools in our building (MS 113, Compass, PS 372) come together to support families in our school communities who are in need during the holiday season.

You can visit the link HERE to sign up to donate an item or gift card. You can also donate money via cash/check (please place in the FSC mailbox outside Amanda's office in the community room) or Square cash (donate online via Squarecash with 'holidaysponsor' in the notes section). Monetary donations will be used to purchase items that are not purchased by 12/18.

We are grateful for any donations that you are able to make, no matter how small. Donations (gifts should be unwrapped) can be brought to the Compass Main Office (Room 431, 4th floor) on or beforeFriday, December 18, 2015.

If you have any questions about the gift drive, please email Thank you for helping us to brighten the holiday season for those in need in our school community.

Fire Department Visit: Citations and Things to Keep in Mind

As we announced on Wednesday, got a visit from the fire department two Fridays ago. They gave us a few citations. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Any items that are hanging form the ceiling need to be taken down. This includes student work and fabric. Sorry :(.
  • Work displayed in hallways should not be covering more than 20% of the wall. The fire marshal who recently evaluated us said that work can't be on walls other than on bulletin boards. We are working on getting more bulletin boards because we think that we are lacking a bunch. Feel free to hang student work in the meantime, but try not to coat the walls with it.
