E.B. Lewis

Children's Illustrator & Artist

Our special guest is coming tomorrow!!!

Tomorrow is an exciting day at Central School as we welcome our guest illustrator and artist, E.B. Lewis! We have been busy planning and preparing for this exciting learning opportunity for our students for many months. E.B. Lewis is a successful artist who specializes in watercolor paintings and illustrations. He has illustrated 65 children's books and has received the Caldecott Honor Medal for his illustrations in the children's book, Coming On Home Soon.

Throughout the past two weeks, our Central School students have studied E.B. Lewis's works, read stories, examined watercolor illustrations, recreated watercolors using his illustrations as inspirational pieces, and researched about his life!!

We have been very busy in the library and are very excited about his visit tomorrow to our school. Our students and entire staff would like to thank the PTA for sponsoring such a special day for us!

If you are interested in purchasing one of his illustrated books, please complete the form attached and hand it in tomorrow! This is the last day to have his books signed by E.B. Lewis himself!

Thank you, as always, for your support for Central School and all our wonderful learning opportunities!

Each Kindness:

Each Kindness makes the world a little better Chloe and her friends won’t play with the new girl, Maya. Maya is different–she wears hand-me-downs and plays with old-fashioned toys. Every time Maya tries to join Chloe and her gang, they reject her. Eventually, Maya plays alone, and then stops coming to school altogether. When Chloe’s teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she’d shown a little kindness toward Maya.

The Other Side:

E.B. Lewis’s evocative watercolors lay bare the personalities and emotions of the two young heroines, one African – American and one white. As the girls, both instructed by their mothers not to climb over the fence, watch each other from a distance, their body language and facial expressions provide clues to their ambivalence about their mother’s directives.

My Best Friend:

Told in Lily’s honest voice and paired with dazzling watercolor illustrations by award-winning illustrator E. B. Lewis, My Best Friend will help children to understand that friendship is not always as simple as we wish.

The Bat Boy and his Violin:

Reginald loves his violin. His constant practice pays off in floods of beautiful music; however, Papa could care less about Reginald’s “fiddling.” He’s more concerned about the Dukes’ losing streak, and he needs his son for something other than playing music. When Papa makes Reginald the Dukes’ batboy, Reginald worries that his practice time will suffer, and that he won’t be ready for his recital. Award-winning artist E.B. Lewis brings the warmth of this powerful story to life with his lush watercolor paintings.

Coming On Home Soon:

It’s wartime, and women have to go to work while the men are off fighting. Ada Ruth’s mama has a job in Chicago, and she must leave Ada Ruth and Grandma behind. Now Ada Ruth and Grandma are missing Mama and trying to keep each other strong; however, some days, it feels like nothing can fill the emptiness in their hearts. Then a surprise comes to their door and gives them something to fuss over while they wait for the letter that will say Mama’s coming on home soon. In this timeless story, Woodson’s evocative text and Lewis’s captivating artwork capture all that comes with missing and waiting-the sadness, the everyday living, the small surprises, and most of all, the hope.
