Wilson's Weekly
April 15-19, 2019
Math
Monday, we will begin a new unit - Interpreting Data & Graphing. The students will take the pretest first to show what they already know. Tuesday, the students will participate in a Lay's taste test and then record our class data in a tally chart & frequency table. Wednesday, our class will create a pictograph using data about which icing flavor Eileen's Colossal Cookies should add to their menu. Thursday, the students will be working in teams to create a survey. Friday, each team will be visiting another class in our Tiger Shark Pod and surveying the students to see which icing flavor is most popular.
Reading
Each day this week, we will be reading two nonfiction articles and then comparing & contrasting the articles to find the similarities and differences. We'll look for how the main idea in both articles is similar and what important details are different.
Writing
This week, we will be reviewing topics that we need to revisit before the students take the MAP Test. Monday, we'll cover putting important events from a story in the correct sequence. Tuesday, we'll revisit what to include when writing a friendly letter. Wednesday, the students will learn that homographs are words that sound alike & are spelled the same, but they have multiple meanings. Thursday, we will practice gathering important information from nonfiction text features - maps, photographs, charts, diagrams, etc.
Science
Monday, the students will work with their groups to finish creating their animal's habitat. Tuesday & Wednesday, the students will share their slideshow and habitat with the rest of the class.
Social Studies
Thursday, we'll begin a new unit in Social Studies - Economics. First, the students will learn the difference between a good & a service. A good is an item that you buy, use, or consume. A service is work that someone does for another. We'll discuss examples of each. Friday, we'll talk about the difference between a producer and a consumer. We will also learn about 3 types of taxes that Americans pay and what our tax dollars are used for.
