Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Guardians,
Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Guardians,
We are almost half way through the school year! This year is just flying by. We are seeing tremendous growth in our students, both academically and socially. They are becoming more mature and responsible every day. Late work has become a rare thing, indeed. If you are seeing some with your student, have a heart-to-heart and see what you and your student can do to establish procedures to ensure success.
Only one semester to go! Let’s make it fabulous!
Mrs. Boyer, Miss Miller, Mr. Rawls
Teacher of the Year!
Kudos to our very own Miss Miller for being selected as the
Hurst Hills Teacher of the Year!!!
You rock, Miss Miller!!!! We love you!!!
Mrs. Boyer's Math Awesomeness!
We have been working on fractions and will soon be working on algebraic relationships. There is a tremendous amount of material to cover, so it is critical that your student not miss any school unless absolutely necessary.
Please note that the 5th Grade Math STAAR Test is on March 28. We can do this!
Math joke:
If two’s company and three’s a crowd, what are four and five? 9 LOL!!
Miss Miller's Reading Nook
As we get back into the swing of school, listed below are some great questions your student can answer about their Lexiled book before taking a Reading Counts Test. In the fourth six weeks our points goal will be 25.
What is the book’s title and author?
What is the setting? (Where & when it took place)
Who are the main characters?
What is the story’s main problem?
Name some of the events from the plot?
What is the story’s solution/conclusion?
Mr. Rawls' Science Corner
Our Solar System
In the fourth six week period we will be focusing on Earth and Space Science. We will begin with a review of our Solar System. We will do a quick study of the planets (facts, sequence etc.) then focus on the Sun as the center of our system due to its large mass and gravity.
We will study nuclear fusion, the process by which the sun converts Hydrogen into Helium while releasing the tremendous amount of electromagnet energy we refer to as Solar Energy. We will then focus on the various cycles that effect us: day & night, the seasons, the lunar cycle, the tides etc.
In the last part of the six weeks we will turn our focus to Earth processes. After a quick review of the Layers of the Earth and the Rock Cycle, we will learn how the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition are constantly changing the world around us. We will also spend time examining the formation of fossils and our non-renewable resources (coal, oil & natural gas) before studying our renewable alternatives.
