WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update
March 2020
Reading and Writing
Reading
We are finishing our Becoming Avid Readers unit. In this unit, we build on our reading super powers and used them to develop and share a love of reading through reading playdates and poetry.
Writing
We are continuing our Persuasive Writing unit where we use our words to make a change. Students are finding problems in the world, in their homes and in the school. Once we notice a problem we give convincing reasons and a solution to fix the problem. At the end of the unit we move on to stating our opinion and give convincing reasons to persuade the reader to agree!
Math
For Number Corner this month we will be practicing how many more to make ten, addition and subtraction story problems, 11-30 interval counting and making ten on the number line.
For Bridges Lessons we will finish up Unit 6 and move onto Unit 7. We will be working with weight and numbers, continuing to see the teen numbers as ten and some more, addition and subtraction story problems and counting by tens and ones. New Work Places will be introduced, including “Capture the Number” and “Double Draw”.
Science
Our science unit this month will look at the weather and the changing of seasons. We will take an in depth look at what happens when winter changes to spring and animals come out of hibernation.
Social Studies
We will begin a new unit, “What Is in My Neighborhood?” Students will identify characteristics of a neighborhood, plan, and create a model neighborhood.
LMC - Library
This month, we’ll be looking at different story structures and character traits. Students will likely recognize some familiar favorites in our explorations!
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Bright/Dark and Heavy/Light Timbres, including the creation of a musical rainstorm!
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: continuing our work with long and short sounds and comparing that to our steady beat. Later in the month, we will be learning about forte (loud) and piano (quiet).
Technology
Students are creating original graphics and using clipart in drawing programs. Students are learning features of the computer program KidPix, which is a creativity software for drawing and painting. Students are navigating the educational website abcya.com.
Art
What is creativity? How do artists improve their art? How do some artists make their art realistic? (Beautiful Oops, Apple Still Life)
PE
We just finished up with our basketball unit and students enjoyed participating in our Hoops for Heart event days, that took place on Feb. 28 and March 1. Thank you to all who helped fundraise for this event and for supporting The American Heart Association! All donations must be made online or turned into Mrs. Johnson by Fri. March 15, thank you!
The month of March is filled with some awesome units. We will be training for the Ninja Warrior! Students will explore different fitness activities through fitness stations and games. By the end of the month, they will be ready to compete in our WM Ninja Warrior course.
