A Note from Mrs. Nam
Dear Families,
Let's stay healthy! As the weather changes, please make sure your children are dressed in layers. It's quite cool in the morning and then heats up by lunch!
Healthy food choices also are important. I"m seeing some lunches comprised only of donuts, chips, and crackers. I too had a picky eater who basically ate a "yellow diet" of pasta, bananas, and goldfish, but I knew how important it was for him to eat a balanced diet. My job as a parent was to make sure my kids were eating not just what they want, but what they need.
Kids taste buds are still developing, and somewhere a long time ago I read that it take up to 15 times before developing a taste for the new food. (We actually told Tyler and Em they needed to try the food 17 times before they could say they didn't like it.)
So, with my picky eater I would make him try everything over and over - just one bite. With most things, after 6-7 times, he would end up liking (or at least tolerating) the food. I have to say that he truly doesn't like pork or carnitas. We did get to the 17th time and after that didn't make him eat it. To this day he doesn't like carnitas, but he is a very healthy eater and even chastises me when I don't make the best choices. haha
Please help your children develop their taste buds and find fruits, vegetables, and proteins that they enjoy. It will help their physical and brain growth and it will help them keep their emotions and bodies regulated.

NUSD BOARD MEETING
Thank you to Ms. Daly and Coach Angela for a wonderful presentation highlighting the 600 Seconds to Glory Running Club!
Ms. Daly shared that what the kids are learning at running club is transferring over to the classroom. A few of her insights include:
- It sets the tone for the day
- An increase in calm in the classroom - especially with transitions
- Growth in ability to self-regulate emotions in their bodies
- Persevering more
- Becoming more confident with participating in classroom
- Getting better at setting goals
Coach Angela shared the some of the goals of the program:
- 10 minutes everyday
- Becomes a habit
- If you do small things everyday, it will lead to huge growth
- Everybody can do it!
Below is the Rancho Run Club video that was shared at the board meeting!
Social Emotional Learning
Even though this curriculum is introduced in the lower grades, it is helpful for everyone. I used it in 4th and 5th grade and it really helped the children identify appropriate feelings and talk about what they needed.
These would also be helpful to have at home for students to use and refer to when they have those big feelings. Kimochi Chart and Feelings
ALL Feelings are OK, All Behaviors are Not
- Say or name the feeling word
- Reduce the size of the feeling with a calm-down breath
- Redo hurtful moments
- Go to a trusted person for help
And remember - you can be mad, but you can't be mean
Positive Office Referrals
Dasha was recognized for perseverance and self-control! Bryanna was recognized for collaboration and integrity. We are SO proud of you. Keep up the good work.
Connecting With Our Community
As you know, our number one goal is to create an amazing learning environment for our students. We've learned that sometimes that means reaching beyond our school into the greater community.
We encourage everyone to be informed about issues at the district, city, county, state and national levels that directly impact our students. For example:
Did you know that NUSD is currently looking for a new Superintendent and that the public can attend a hearing this coming Wed., Oct. 19th? Learn more at www.nusd.org
Did you know that we have elections on Tue., Nov. 8 and that how we vote for candidates, measures, and propositions can impact our students and school? Learn more at www.vote411.org
Together we can make positive changes for our students!
Thank you!
