Instruction to meet NH College and Career Ready Standards Based on the Common Core

About the Presentation:

How can 3-8 teachers prepare their students for the Common Core?

Elementary and Middle school teachers in Grades 3-8 face a unique two-fold challenge as educators: they must continue to build the reading skills of their students while simultaneously focusing on transmitting content knowledge. The Common Core offers explicit guidance to these teachers regarding not only the demands with respect to increasing the knowledge base of students, but also the expectations for students with respect to close reading. Indeed, the Standards see these activities as closely intertwined: educators must select content-rich complex texts and guide students in extracting the relevant information and evidence from them to deepen their understanding of what they are reading about.

This workshop will focus on how teachers in Grades 3-8 can integrate close reading activities into their content instruction. It will guide them in creating high-quality text dependent questions and translating the reading they ask students to complete into meaningful performance tasks. Over the course of the morning, participants will learn best practices with respect to building CCSS aligned lessons and assessments from a teacher who was part of the construction of the Common Core State Standards.

Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the CCSS for a Grades 3-8 student and faculty audience and the teacher friendly tools and resources they need to successfully implement the standards in their classrooms, schools, and districts.

About the Presenter

Dr. David Pook is a New Hampshire high school and college teacher with 20 years classroom experience. In his work as an educational consultant he helped craft the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts with the Council of Chief State Officers. In conjunction with numerous consulting organizations like Student Achievement Partners, Achieve, The Aspen Institute, StandardsWork, EdFirst, and WETA, he has helped evaluate and design English and History standards, curriculum, and professional development for numerous states, districts, dioceses, and schools. David helped design the PARCC Model Content Frameworks and the CCSSO Framework for English Language Proficiency Standards. He currently has several projects underway on work aligned with the CCSS, including close reading best practices and curriculum design for ELLs. He works with both large urban districts such as Boston, New York, Chicago, Memphis, Phoenix, and Tampa as well as smaller districts in New England and elsewhere on implementation issues related to the CCSS.

David has his Master’s and doctorate in Philosophy from Indiana University, and his teaching awards include the American Star of Teaching from National Presidential Scholars Program. He lives in Warner, New Hampshire with his wife Elizabeth, daughters Beatrice and Imogen, and his Old English Sheepdog Morangie. When he’s not teaching or consulting about teaching, he reads, cooks, and stacks wood (and thinks about teaching).

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation should be made in writing. A full refund will be made for cancellations postmarked, or sent via email, 7 days before the event.

No refunds will be given for requests received after 7 days before the event, or for "no shows". We do accept substitution of another person at our conference. 24 hours of notification is appreciated.

All received registrations are subject to Cancellation/Refund policy. Cost of registration fee is still liable whether payment is paid or unpaid, if no notice of cancellation is received at least 7 days prior to the event.

If minimum requirement enrollment is not met prior to the early registration deadline, the event may be postponed or canceled.
