A Message from the WSD Administration

The Importance of Community

by Carter Smith

As Thanksgiving approaches I am reminded of many things that I appreciate in my life. Sometimes I take them for granted and so it is good to have a holiday that reminds me to acknowledge these gifts. I will skip the wife and kids and grandkids for now, although they are high on the list.

Today I want to appreciate and acknowledge the Williston School Community, including parents, teachers, staff and students. Last summer we had a celebration of life for Debra Lentine, a teacher who died of cancer. She was an awesome individual/professional/friend/colleague/mother/spouse/athlete. The community filled the school auditorium to honor her life and grieve for the loss. Last Friday two teachers organized a fundraiser along the lines of the Movember Foundation- many of us who could grow beards did so. The funds would go to help build a dragon boat in Debra's memory. (This is not a solicitation of funds.) Through the bearded staff and their friends and families, $1800 has been raised to this point. In another day at this rate the goal will be met.

WCS is a Digital Citizenship Certified School

Williston Central School has been recognized as a Digital Citizenship Certified School by Common Sense, a national organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology. We are the first school in Vermont to achieve this distinction.
Many of our teachers devoted instructional time to this topic at the beginning of this school year. This was especially relevant now that our middle school students all have a Chromebook to use during the school day. All of our middle school teams and students used Common Sense’s Digital Compass ( to explore different facets of digital citizenship, ranging from Privacy, Cyberbullying, Copyright and Giving Credit, to Digital Footprints and Information Literacy. We have completed 3rd and 5th grade vision and hearing screening this week.
Students that did not pass the initial screening will be re-tested in December; if they fail the repeat test, we will send out referral letters to families.
If your child passed both hearing and vision, you will not get a notification in the mail, but you are always welcome to call the Health Office at 871-6170 and inquire if you want specific details. We will do 7th grade vision on Tuesday December 1st.
Thank you and have a nice break!
