A Message from the WSD Administration
The Importance of Community
by Carter Smith
As Thanksgiving approaches I am reminded of many things that I appreciate in my life. Sometimes I take them for granted and so it is good to have a holiday that reminds me to acknowledge these gifts. I will skip the wife and kids and grandkids for now, although they are high on the list.
Today I want to appreciate and acknowledge the Williston School Community, including parents, teachers, staff and students. Last summer we had a celebration of life for Debra Lentine, a teacher who died of cancer. She was an awesome individual/professional/friend/colleague/mother/spouse/athlete. The community filled the school auditorium to honor her life and grieve for the loss. Last Friday two teachers organized a fundraiser along the lines of the Movember Foundation- many of us who could grow beards did so. The funds would go to help build a dragon boat in Debra's memory. (This is not a solicitation of funds.) Through the bearded staff and their friends and families, $1800 has been raised to this point. In another day at this rate the goal will be met.Continue reading.
WCS is a Digital Citizenship Certified School
Many of our teachers devoted instructional time to this topic at the beginning of this school year. This was especially relevant now that our middle school students all have a Chromebook to use during the school day. All of our middle school teams and students used Common Sense’s Digital Compass (https://www.digitalcompass.org/) to explore different facets of digital citizenship, ranging from Privacy, Cyberbullying, Copyright and Giving Credit, to Digital Footprints and Information Literacy.
