A Note from the Principal...
Greetings Parents:
Lunch With Your Child
Having lunch with your child can be a great experience for both you and your child. We wish we had more space to accommodate our parents. As it stands, we have special tables set aside for you and your child to use for your special lunch with them. There have been some days where we just do not have enough space. As a result, we ask that you spend this special time with just your child. It is hard on many children who may not get “chosen” to eat with a friend. We also are asking that parents not bring in large “party pack” types of lunches for a number of children such as pizzas, etc. Try to keep this a special time just between you and your child.
Extras and Special Diets
Our cafeteria provides a selection of three entrees at each meal along with fruits, vegetables and milk. If your child has special dietary restrictions as a family choice, please discuss the menu selections with them. We do not have the ability to monitor each student for family choice dietary restrictions. The same goes for “extras.” If you do not want your child to have the “extras” during lunch, please discuss this with them. Our cafeteria ladies want to maintain a good relationship with your children and do not have any desire to remove food from a student’s tray and embarrass them. The menu for the elementary schools can be found in our newsletter and on the Plainfield Community School Corporation website under “Services.”
Schedule Change
Students in kindergarten, first, second and third grades may notice a slight change in their schedule for special classes. All students will now have access to art and music all year. Students in kindergarten, first, second and third grades will also have access to our Character Education Program (CARS) that is run by Mrs. Nay, our Home-School Advisor. Each of these grades will see her for one quarter. We feel that access to art, music and physical education is vital to the overall educational welfare of all students.Sincerely,
Mr. Underwood

Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Sherrie Sutton, Third Grade Class
This is Mrs. Sutton's tenth year of teaching. She taught Title I for five years and is now in her fifth year teaching third grade. She has taught all ten years at Brentwood.
Mrs. Sutton grew up in Shelby County in the country. She attended a small school in Waldron, and that is where she and her husband currently live. She attended Indiana State to get her initial teaching license and then Butler for her master’s degree. Mrs. Sutton and her husband, Brandon, have been married for five years. Brandon is a pastor and manages a men’s recovery home in Shelbyville. "We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our daughter, Emma. She is due on September 20th, and we can’t wait for her to get here. Once Emma arrives, we also hope to foster and adopt." shared Mrs. Sutton.

When she isn't teaching at Brentwood, Mrs. Sutton enjoys spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews. Mr. and Mrs. Sutton also love going to the movies! She says their honeymoon to Hawaii was the most interesting place she has traveled. "It was so beautiful!"
"When I taught Title 1, I taught students in first through third grade. With one group of students, I taught them in Title 1 for first and second grade. Then, I because a third grade teacher and had these students in my classroom in third grade. It was such an amazing experience to see how much growth they made throughout the three years I worked with them. This group was my first “class” and have such a special place in my heart."
As a third grade teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education?
"I know how busy parents are. With school, homework, sports, and other activities, families are constantly rushing around. I think that we often neglect the importance of simply spending time as a family without having to “do” something. I would encourage parents to simply spend time talking with their children. Reading a book or taking a walk are great things to do to spend meaningful time with your child."
Fellow 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Davis, says, "Sherrie’s number one priority is to her students and what is best for them. She has very high expectations, and helps every student rise to the occasion. Sherrie is always very well planned and prepared for class and maximizes her minutes with her students. She is compassionate for those students who are troubled by issues going on outside of school, and is ready to help them in any way she can."
Mrs. Sutton's other third grade colleague, Miss Binole had the following to say, "Sherrie always has the best interest of her students in mind. She has been working very hard to plan for her class to prepare for the time away from them during her maternity leave. She is going above and beyond to ensure their needs are met while she’s away. She is a team player and always willing to share ideas, and I appreciate that. Sherrie is just an overall good and kind person, and it’s a pleasure to work with her."
3rd Grade Field Trip to Marsh
4th Graders Step into the pages of the book, FRINDLE
4th grade students at Brentwood are currently reading the novel, Frindle. Tuesday they hopped from station to station in all 4 classrooms so they could all experience our version of Mrs. Granger when they stepped into room 254.
What's the book Frindle about???
Nicholas Allen has plenty of ideas. Who can forget the time he turned his third-grade classroom into a tropical island, or the times he fooled his teacher by chirping like a blackbird? But now Nick's in fifth grade, and it looks like his days as a troublemaker are over.
Everyone knows that Mrs. Granger, the language arts teacher, has X-ray vision, and nobody gets away with anything in her classroom. To make matters worse, she's also a fanatic about the dictionary, which is hopelessly boring to Nick. But when Nick learns an interesting tidbit about words and where they come from, it inspires his greatest plan yet: to invent a new word. From now on, a pen is no longer a pen -- it's a frindle.
It doesn't take long for frindle to take root, and soon the excitement spreads well beyond his school and town. His parents and Mrs. Granger would like Nick to put an end to all this nonsense. But frindle doesn't belong to Nick anymore. All he can do now is sit back and watch what happens.
This quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words will have readers inventing their own words. Brian Selznick's black-and-white illustrations enhance the humor in this unforgettable story.
