News from Mrs. Kreillein
Social Skills Groups
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Southeast Dubois, we are committed to providing a well-rounded education that not only focuses on academics but also on the social development of our students. We believe that strong social skills are essential for success in school and beyond.
In the coming weeks, we will be implementing Social Skills Groups for our students. These groups will be led by our School Social Worker, Mrs. Kreilein, and will focus on helping all students build important social skills that will support their overall growth and development. Teachers will identify areas of need in their classroom that will guide the topics of the group. Topics may include basic school behaviors (keeping hands to self, taking turns, working together, etc.), controlling emotions, making friends, or self-confidence.
Groups are open to all students and based on teacher recommendations. Each group will be held weekly for 4-6 sessions.
We believe that these sessions will not only benefit children academically but also help them navigate the social aspects of their lives with confidence and resilience. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Elaine Kreilein at elaine.kreilein@sedubois.k12.in.us or 812-817-0900 ext 2006.
What is Bullying?
Navigating Bullying: A Guide for Elementary School Parents
Bullying is a concern that affects not only our children but our entire school community. As parents, it's crucial that we understand what bullying is, how it can impact our children, and what steps we can take to prevent and address it. In this article, we will explore the topic of bullying in elementary schools and provide you with valuable insights and strategies to help keep your child safe and supported.
Understanding Bullying
Bullying is not just a harmless part of growing up; it can have lasting effects on a child's emotional and psychological well-being. It's essential to distinguish between conflict, teasing, and bullying:
1. Conflict: This refers to ordinary disagreements or arguments that can happen between children. It is typically a mutual disagreement, and both parties are involved.
2. Teasing: Teasing is often done in a playful or joking manner and is not meant to hurt someone. However, it's important to teach children to recognize when teasing goes too far and becomes hurtful. Teasing is only teasing if both children find it funny.
3. Bullying: Bullying involves repetitive, intentional, and hurtful actions or words that are meant to harm another child physically or emotionally. It often involves a power imbalance, with one child using their strength or social status to target another.
Recognizing the Signs
As parents, it's crucial to look for signs that your child might be experiencing bullying:
1. Changes in Behavior: If your child suddenly becomes withdrawn, anxious, or starts avoiding school or social situations, these could be signs of bullying.
2. Unexplained Physical Complaints: Frequent headaches, stomachaches, or other physical complaints without a medical cause may be a response to bullying-related stress.
3. Lost or Damaged Belongings: If your child's belongings are consistently lost, damaged, or missing, it could be due to bullying.
4. Social Isolation: Bullying often leads to children feeling isolated. They may have trouble making friends or may suddenly lose friends they used to be close to.
5. Changes in Academic Performance: A sudden drop in grades or a loss of interest in school can be indicators of bullying-related stress.
Taking Action
If you suspect your child is experiencing bullying, here are steps you can take:
1. Talk to Your Child: Encourage open communication with your child. Ask them about their day, their friends, and any challenges they may be facing.
2. Contact the School: Reach out to your child's teacher or school counselor to discuss your concerns. Schools have policies in place to address bullying.
3. Empower Your Child: Teach your child strategies to handle bullying, such as assertiveness and seeking help from trusted adults.
4. Promote Empathy: Encourage your child to be kind and empathetic towards others.

Ranger Archery Sign-ups
2023-2024 Rangers Archery Registration National Archery in Schools Program (NASP)
The Ranger NASP program will begin the week of October 30 - November 3. The 1st week will be an informational meeting for parents and archers held in the gym at Pine Ridge. Parents will pay registration fees and collect other information about our program. Practices will be scheduled based on participation per grade level, but we expect grades 9 - 12 to practice on Mondays, grades 4-5 to practice on Tuesdays, and grades 6-8 to practice on Thursdays. Practice schedules will be finalized after registration closes. Practices will be held at Pine Ridge Elementary School.
Information for REGISTRATION and the FIRST PRACTICE SESSION:
Complete this form to register your child. A $50 fee will be charged to each participant with a maximum per family of $100. The registration fee will be paid at the parent/archer meeting the week of October 30 - November 3, 2023. The registration fee covers equipment usage (bow, arrows, targets, etc.), a shooter shirt for the archer, and two home tournaments that will be held at CCI.
At the first practice session for your archer, archers will enter the main entrance of Pine Ridge. Archers who use their own equipment will have their bow and arrows inspected for defects by a group of coaches.
At each practice archers will enter the main door at the circle and exit the south facing gym doors. Archers may wait in the main hallway prior to practice. Parents will wait outside for archers. We are unable to monitor archers before or after their assigned practice time. If parents are not at school at the end of their assigned practice archers may wait in the main hallway, but they must walk around the building to enter.
Ranger Archers are expected to follow all NASP safety procedures during practices and tournaments. Archers who do not follow the specific NASP rules and safety guidelines will be removed from the program without hesitation.
We plan to host two tournaments this year. The dates for these tournaments will be December 16, 2023 and January 27, 2024. We will need parent support to set up, tear down, and conduct quality tournaments for all participants. We are also seeking financial support from area businesses in exchange for advertising opportunities at our tournaments, on our social media page, and on our shirts. Tournaments, donations, and Pulled Pork BBQ are the main fundraising sources for our program.
If you have questions or concerns you may reach out to Brad Beck (812) 582-9269, or email rangerarchery@sedubois.k12.in.us.
Please complete the registration by October 27, 2023. We would like to put the numbers together so we can get an email sent out with specific dates and times for practice. Looking forward to a fun and successful year.
