National Child Protection Week, 5 – 11 September 2021

A fair go for kids: National Child Protection Week 2021

Every child, in every community, needs a fair go.

To treat all of Australia’s children fairly, we need to make sure every family and community has what kids need to thrive and be healthy. The 2021 theme for National Child Protection Week is all about the importance of the ‘bigger picture’ in addressing child abuse and neglect. Children can thrive and be healthy when they have what they need to develop well.

But not every family has these resources. This is why we need to support every child, family and community according to their needs. This will create a healthier, fairer Australia for all children. A lot of great research is helping us understand more and more about what children need to thrive.

Child Protection Week 2021 will be an opportunity to translate this knowledge into action. All skillsets, all people, and all communities are assets in this important endeavour. Many of you are already playing your part every day – as individuals, as community members, as volunteers and as workers – to help create these great communities for children.

When we do this together, we can give ‘every child, in every neighbourhood, a fair go’.

This is a gentle reminder to all families that staff at St Luke’s strongly recommends heavily supervising your children on devices and monitoring the content that they are accessing. Please refer below to the important information on responsible use of technology.

As well as being powerful learning tools, iPads and devices are often used by students in their own time at home for entertainment. If you allow your child to put their own apps on to a device, please ensure the apps are age appropriate and that you are fully aware of the privacy settings and whether the app allows them to communicate with others. Many online games and apps contain content and material that is not suitable for students and actually desensitises their feelings of empathy, concern and care.

Social media platforms are often misused and can be avenues for students to use inappropriate language or to bully others. Please ensure that children have a balanced use of technology and that they are participating in non-digital activities to promote their health and wellbeing. Please talk to your children about balanced use of IT and ensuring that it is used at appropriate times. Research what a digital footprint is and discuss this with your child. There is no substitute for open communication and supervision when assisting your child to use technology responsibly.

Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp 2021

The Year Six children and staff attending are having a brilliant time at camp this week. They have been so busy being involved in rafting building, flying fox, the crate challenge, ropes course (abseiling), catapult making and search and rescue (orienteering). I was very proud of everyone at camp for having a go, being inclusive and seeing team work in action. Parents of children in Year Six should feel immensely proud too!

God Moments

  • Hearing Year Six students saying encouraging and positive words to each other on camp.
  • Year Six students facing their fears and overcoming them on camp.
  • St Luke’s staff sharing words of encouragement with students as they achieve great things on camp.
  • Seeing team work on camp, it was extraordinary!

Fluency Parent Workshop

Last Wednesday our Early Childhood Educators invited parents to a Fluency Workshop We had a fabulous turn out from our Pre Primary – Year 2 families. The workshop explained the importance of fluency and how we can assist children to develop this skill in their reading both at school and home. Thank you to the staff members who stayed back after school to supervise the children too. We hope you all found this workshop helpful and a means to support your children during these vital years of language development.

R U OK Day?

Today is “RUOK day?” This is about reminding us to check in with those around us and making sure that everything is OK. It’s important that if we haven’t heard from someone in a while or if someone is behaving differently that we check in on them to see how they are going. Speak with your children about who they trust and who they can talk to if they are feeling unsafe or insecure. There are many resources available on the RUOK website and the following link shares with us how we can approach asking whether someone is ok and what to do in a range of situations:

Cyber Safety Update

Keeping in line with Child Protection Week, it is a timely reminder about monitoring our Children's device usage. If you are looking for some sort of parental controls there are a lot available but if we had to recommend one it’s Family Zone. Our parent community can get 10% of Family Zone if you visit here and you can also receive free insights. There is more information about parental controls and the free insights on Kaylene Kerr's website here.

Many parents and students met Kaylene at our Cyber Safety Workshops earlier in the year. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to join the eSafeKids Members’ Community where you’ll find the Supporting & Inspiring Family Conversations series. There are also book readings of child friendly books in the community that may interest you at home.

The eSafety website contains lots of information, as does Common Sense Media.

AUSLAN Alphabet

Have you seen our beautiful AUSLAN alphapet in the front office? How many letters can you sign? Can you sign your name? Thank you, Mrs Cragg, for your efforts in introducing our school to the world of AUSLAN!

Lost Property

The office continues to get a large amount of lost property each day.

Please make sure your child's school clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and containers are clearly labelled. It is very difficult to return these items to the student when it is not labelled.

  • Unlabelled Lunch boxes, containers & drink bottles are kept for 1 week then thrown out.

Thank you

As we head towards the end of a fantastic term the P&F want to send a huge shout of thanks to all those people who have volunteered for our last few big events.

We had a super successful Book Fair with over 25 parents helping Mrs Simmonds in setting up, selling books and packing up the library throughout St Luke’s Book Week.

We had a fantastic morning celebrating all the Dads and male carers of St Luke’s with a nice big BBQ breakfast. We have also had loads of year 4 parents and friends create delicious goodies and prepare gifts so our students could go shopping and buy something special for their dads.

Finally, this week we have had Year 1 parents baking up a cupcake storm to support a wonderful fundraiser. So many events with staff, students, parents, and friends working together is really what makes our beautiful school so special.
