Math
ELA
In reading, we are finishing our unit on figurative language. We have studied: similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, idioms, and hyperbole. We will be testing on this at the end of next week.
We have also been reviewing theme. Students have looked at common themes in literature, determined the theme in various texts, and studied how characters change over time. We will spend next week practicing and reviewing theme, and will be testing this unit in the next couple of weeks.
In writing, we are working on 3rd person narratives. We are starting with learning how to incorporate dialogue into our stories and develop our characters in a way that makes them interesting. We will also be studying various writing techniques such as word choice, using transition words, creating a setting, and having a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Science and Social Studies
Science
We began our unit this week on Changes in Matter. We have learned that in this unit we will be exploring both physical and chemical changes in matter as well as exploring mixtures and solutions. We learned this week that temperature and the movement of particles can help determine the state of matter and that when matter changes states it is undergoing a physical change. We learned that rust on metal forms from a chemical change because a new substance is formed. We will continue to explore ideas about chemical and physical changes in matter next week.
Social Studies
We had such an amazing time practicing our skills with Economics at the Blue Springs School of Economics last Friday. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped out in each shop the day of the field trip. The day was such a success for the kids and we couldn’t have done it without your help!
We have continued our study of Economics with our focus being on the concepts of supply and demand this past week. We have learned that supply and demand can effect the price of products for consumers. We have also been working closely on using text evidence to help prove our thinking about supply and demand as well as using it to help make inferences about supply and demand and its effect on prices. We will continue to explore the Economic concepts of revenue, profit, expenses, human resources, capital resources, natural resources, needs, wants, and opportunity cost over the next couple of weeks.
We finished our regions of the United States studies by looking at the states and capitals of the Northeast this week. We will take our final regions quiz over the states and capitals of the Northeast on Tuesday, November 12. I am continuing to share some websites below that I have shared previously that the children can use at home to help them study their states and capitals for the Northeast. I am including the links to these sites below. The students were also given a study guide over the states and capitals of the Northeast this past week to help them prepare as well.
