student spotlight
Coming to a new country in search of more for themselves and their families. This is the truth for many part of The CALC community. Wilmar Guzman and Kely Cuxeva came to the United States 9 years ago, in the hopes of just that. They had lived in Marlborough, Massachusetts until they decided in 2021, to relocate here, Clinton, Massachusetts. Moving to Clinton gave them exactly what they wanted from a small town, a safe space to raise their nine year old son, Iker. Although moving to a nice quiet town in order to raise a family was the overall goal, it ultimately brought them closer to The Clinton Adult Learning Center.
They began attending classes almost two years ago and continued coming back because of how personable The CALC felt for them. They had been enrolled in ESL classes before but felt as though the structure of the classroom was tailored towards the more advanced students. Which left them feeling confused and discouraged. but since coming here, they have been able to freely communicate with their teachers, classmates, and grow deeper connections in the community.
This connection that they have developed with their teachers and peers is exactly what kept them returning to The Clinton Adult Learning Center. When asked about their thoughts on the past two years, they claimed to have felt motivated. They believe that attending these classes has motivated them to achieve their goals and has helped them motivate their classmates as well. Being able to hold themselves and their peers to a certain level expectations has pushed them towards their goals and even new opportunities.
Wilmar and Kely are humble and hardworking parents that enjoy helping their fellow classmates achieve the success that they deserve. They are constantly striving towards a better future for themselves and their son, which has, evidently, rubbed off onto him. Iker is known for being a generous boy that finds pride in helping his parents practice their English skills. A family filled with dedicated and kind-hearted people, consistently making us grateful that they're apart of our community here at The CALC!
In loving memory of Mary Pat
At this time each year the CALC program sets up this Christmas Tree in memory of Mary Pat Philbin. This was her tree that she had in her home. After she passed away the Philbin Family donated it to our program.
Mary Pat Philbin was one of our greatest supporters. Her family have provided an HSE Graduate with a scholarship for college for many years. She is greatly missed!
The lighting of this tree each year keeps her spirit alive in our hearts.
