Rivalry Week
Here are some exerpts from KETK on the game:
TYLER, Texas (KETK) - In a rivalry that has spanned decades, the Spring Hill Panthers will meet the White Oak Roughnecks for the 49th time on Friday night. "The Battle of Hawkins Creek" is always just that...a battle.
Going into Friday's contest, the Panthers are 2-0 on the season with victories over Troup (47-21) and Brownsboro (49-20). White Oak is 1-1 on the season with a win over New Diana (54-51) and a loss to Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic School (39-29).
But, did you know the schools are connected by more than nearly 50 years of hard-fought games?
- Friday, September 15, 2017, will be the 49th time the Panthers and Roughnecks have met on the football field.
- The rivalry has been deemed "The Battle of Hawkins Creek."
- White Oak has won 26 of the matchups, while Spring Hill has been victorious in 22.
- There have only been two overtime games in the series. In 1999, Spring Hill defeated White Oak 39-36, while in 2014, the Roughnecks came out on top, 22-19.
- White Oak's largest margin of victory in the series came in 2015 in a 48-0 win, while Spring Hill's came in 1994, with a 34-0 win.
- White Oak ISD Superintendent, Mike Gilbert, was a longtime baseball coach and principal at Spring Hill before making the move to White Oak.
- Former Spring Hill Superintendent Mike Crossland was the basketball coach at White Oak before making the move to Spring Hill.
- White Oak High School Band Director Jason Steele is a Spring Hill graduate.
- Former Spring Hill High School head football coach and high school principal Gene King (1966-1975) is a White Oak graduate.
- White Oak ISD Assistant Superintendent Mitzi Neely is a former Spring Hill High School journalism teacher.
- Current White Oak High School principal Donna Jennings graduated from Spring Hill in 1977, where she was the Drum Major and Salutatorian
- Spring Hill's last district championship in football came in 2003, while White Oak's was in 2012.
- Spring Hill has had one undefeated season (1946).
- Spring Hill has never had a winless season, while White Oak has had one (1977).
- Spring Hill has had 26 total playoff appearances in the football team's history.
- Spring Hill's winningest decade was 2000-2009. (72-41)
- Spring Hill's Panther Stadium has a capacity of 5,844 and opened in 1981. Roughneck Stadium holds 4,500 people and opened in 1951. Spring Hill added turf in 2016 and a new video board in 2017. White Oak still plays on grass.
- Spring Hill has had three NFL players from their school (Chad Mackey, Barry Bowman, Brandon Carter).
Kickoff between the teams is set for 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Roughneck Stadium.
