U of R Brain Bee
The University of Rochester Brain Awareness Campaign (BAC) is holding our fifth annual Brain Bee for high school students, virtually on Saturday, January 30th, 2021! The Brain Bee is a competition for students who want to represent their schools and challenge themselves to learn about the science of the brain. These competitions are sponsored by the international Society for Neuroscience, and thousands of students around the world will compete locally to be their region’s champion. This friendly competition will cover topics such as anatomy, memory, sensory systems, sleep, neurodegenerative diseases, and addiction. Here are some details about the Brain Bee:
The Brain Bee is free for all high school students and will be hosted by the University of Rochester virtually, on January 30th, 2021, from 9:30am-11:30am.
The Brain Bee will be judged by a panel of neuroscientists, including at least two professors from the University of Rochester.
The winner of the Rochester Brain Bee will represent us at the National Brain Bee competition. The format of Nationals is currently TBD. It will either be hosted in Northeast Ohio Medical University (roundtrip airfare and hotel paid for by BAC) or it will be hosted virtually.
Students can practice for the Brain Bee by reviewing the material in the book Brain Facts (free to download at http://www.brainfacts.org/About-Neuroscience/Brain-Facts-book) as well as other study material we will provide upon registration.

FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION DECEMBER - 2020
A Thankful Holiday Season!
We know that our current world is unsettled, and there are still many unknowns regarding COVID-19. Uncertainty is all around us, never more so than today. Pandemics create fear and unrest, and the challenges facing our district are constantly changing, requiring modifications in numerous ways. Although these challenges are pressing and can create stress for everyone, we have witnessed many acts of selflessness and people across our district are adapting, adjusting and going above and beyond for students.
We are grateful for the support to opt in for testing, so that the district can meet the test ratio threshold. Staff and administrators scheduled new routines and protocols so that our schools can administer tests and be compliant.
For the immediate future, let’s focus on the present. We would like nothing more than to see our students remain in school (and continuing their chosen method of learning) so let’s do our part to help! We know that our collective energy toward enacting those behaviors that will keep students healthy and in school should be our common goal: masks, social distancing and clean hands! We hope the message that we are in this together is steadfast and together, as a community, the infection rate is managed.
Please know that while our administrative staff, principals, and teachers are focused on the short term as COVID-19 interrupts routines, we are continuing with strategic planning and policy updates to capture and incorporate what we are learning from this experience.
We appreciate the cooperation and efforts by all; our students' learning and safety are our highest priority, and the business of the district is being taken care of in a measured and thoughtful way.
We want to wish our entire One Webster community a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season. We remain grateful to our resilient students and families, whether they are learning from home or in-person at our 11 schools. Parents/guardians, your guidance, love, and support continue to make a difference in your child(ren)’s education. Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to help kids learn during such extraordinary circumstances. We also thank the district’s faculty and staff for their commitment to excellence and for always giving their best. Our board members are grateful to all of you because we make up a district and community with an unwavering, shared commitment to its young people.
Together, let’s get back to green!
