Crozet Connection
School Quarterly Newsletter ~ April 2017
News from the Principal~ Ms. Crummie
Approaching the end of a school year can be similar to running a race. We know that if we can keep running forward we will eventually get to the finish line but we also want to finish strong. I love using this analogy because it best represents how students need everyone’s support and encouragement this time of year in order to reach their year-end goals (hopes & dreams)!
It is also one of the busiest times of the school year for students, parents and teachers. Keeping children focused on their responsibilities at home and at school can become challenging due to various outdoor activities and busy family schedules not to mention the beauty all around us. Take notice of how well your child is keeping up with his/her school responsibilities. Keep communicating with your teacher(s), check backpacks daily, read over notebooks and peruse the Tuesday folders for important classroom and school information. Read our e-news (PTO Eagle News or weekly classroom newsletters) as we approach the final weeks of the school year.
The yearly Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments will be administered in May (May 8-31) for students in grades three, four and five. Our staff works diligently to teach all content areas, encourage problem-solving and inquiry skills to help our students become life-long, independent learners.
As you read this newsletter, check out our school's design work of Building Community with Contagious Curiosity & Creativity through Wonder that was showcased at our Community Night on March 16. Our students shared with their parents and families their understanding of being connected to our world through many relationships--with people, with our environment, with our local community and across the globe. Our yearly work with this sustainable vision and mission is one of the reasons Crozet Elementary is a National Green Ribbon School.
With 33 1/2 school days remaining for our students, we have exciting upcoming school community events and performances listed under Mark Your Calendar at the bottom of this newsletter and posted on our school web page. Our Western Elementary Schools Summer Exploratory Camp (summer school) will be June 26 to July 14 from 8:00 am to 12:25 pm at Brownsville Elementary. More summer school information will be forthcoming.
As we move into the last weeks of school, let’s all celebrate our students' achievements and reflect on this past school year with them. Let’s continue to inspire them to do their best!
News from the Clinic ~ Mrs. Hajek
Crozet clinic was a very busy place throughout the winter season, and I am hopeful all of the illness is behind us for the school year! The clinic continues to stay busy, but now I am seeing more scrapes, bruises and allergy related symptoms from playing outside.
Here are a few reminders from The Clinic:
1. Now is a good time to schedule yearly physicals for the summer if needed.
2. All 5th grade students will need to receive a DTAP booster vaccine before they begin
6th grade.
3. Routine vision on all 3rd graders was completed in the fall, but vision screening can be done anytime upon request.
4. Please encourage your child to wear shoes to school that are easy to run and play in safely. Packing an extra water bottle for the warmer days is a good way to stay well hydrated. And, trying to stay on a regular sleep schedule with the longer days is important too. Tired children often end up in the clinic not feeling well.
As always, please call the clinic if you have questions or concerns regarding your child's health. I can be reached at 823-4800 between 8-3 every school day. Thank you for all that you do to help make Crozet a healthy place to learn.
News from Guidance ~ Mrs. Joyner
The third quarter has been full of exciting events! We had a successful Random Acts of Kindness week in February. Thank you all for your generous donations to the UVA medical group. Our third through fifth graders also had an exciting visit from author, Julia Cook. Her books do a great job addressing some of the tough parts about growing up. I use many of them in my guidance curriculum. We even got to meet her puppy, Kirby!
News from PE ~ Ms. Laine & Mr. Laird
During our Jump Rope for Heart event, our students raised $ 8,315 for the American Heart Association. We received our thank you gifts and now we are looking forward to our concluding event.... the water balloon toss at teachers on April 26th. We also practiced our rope jumping, tumbling (various rolls), and dancing. We celebrated Groundhog Day, the 100th day of school (with our traditional dropping of 100 balls from the balcony), St. Patrick’s Day, and had another PE Buddy day where we played Submarine with our buddy class. We also learned about the five food groups and had practice making healthy plates of food.
News from Music ~ Mrs. Brown
Spring is finally here! Our students are singing, dancing, and playing their way to warmer weather. Our Kindergarten & First Grade students are preparing for their program "where the Wild Things Are" coming up on June 1st. Second & Third Graders performed a show "The Music of America." Fourth Graders are working to improve the quality of their music by identifying successful music making strategies while playing in a large ensemble. Fifth Graders are learning more about the orchestra and sound production from UVA Orchestra guest musicians. Select fifth grade students attended Albemarle County Honors Choir to perform in a concert with 150 students from other schools in Albemarle County. Additionally, all Crozet students attended the program "Rhythms 'Round Virginia" to learn about and listen to a variety of folk instruments in Virginia's History. Our Drama Club is preparing for their production of The Jungle Book coming up on Friday, April 28th. Crozet also hosted a Community Night with folk dancing in the music room.
News from Art ~ Mrs. Caplan
All grade levels have been focusing on 3-D & mixed media Art! Kindergarten made 3-D pattern snakes, 1st grade is making rolled paper sculptures, and 2nd grade created mixed media sculptures with found objects. 3rd graders became architects and designed/built their own 3-D buildings, and 4th grade & 5th grade are combining different materials to make one cohesive piece of art.
Also, check out our Art blog to see what we’re working on at any given time:
News from Library ~Mrs. Anhold
We were able to visit with two authors and an illustrator during the Virginia Festival of the Book. Fourth and fifth graders went to the St. Anne’s Belfield convocation center to see author/poet Kwame Alexander and illustrator Ekua Holmes talk about their new book Out of Wonder. A few days later, author Maria Gianferrari came here to visit second and third grade and discuss the story behind her recent book Coyote Moon.
News From Kindergarten
Parents and students enjoyed participating in Community Night. They visited different stations, such making mustaches and asking questions, creating a pom pom launcher, building with Keva planks and describing how their leprechaun trap worked! Thank you for attending this community building night.
News from 1st Grade
First graders brought some sunshine and luck to our fifth graders by secretly decorating their classroom doors! We have become Super Heros of Kindness!! You never know when we will appear out of know where to make someone’s day brighter! Anyone can spread kindness and share a sparkle!
News from 2nd Grade
News from 3rd Grade
This quarter students researched a famous person and created a nonfiction flip book using nonfiction text features. In addition, they designed a Bottle Buddy dressed like their famous person.
News from 4th Grade
Fourth graders learned all about the five themes of geography! Students chose a town and created a presentation and model showing how the five themes of geography relate to them to share for Community Night.
News from 5th Grade
Our Community Night is always a good time. We shared our RIFFLE Impact project, our Founding Fathers Face-off, and our script-writing skills.
