WELCOME BACK!
I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday. I loved hearing about the days off and the activities that students participated in near and far.
Here are few things happening with us right now!
New Student!!
A big Hillcrest STEAM Academy welcome goes out to Payton Rew and her family. Payton started with us last week. She comes to us from Ms. Grimes at Scott Elementary. We are so glad she is with us!
BRRRRRRRR
Keep in mind we go outside for recess frequently and that it has been a little cold in our classroom these days. Make sure your student has appropriate outdoor dress as well as a light jacket or sweatshirt for the classroom.
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Your student should have brought home a small money box to participate in Pennies for Patients. Any change returned will go to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A flyer will come home later this week with more details.
In an assembly this morning, students were encouraged to dig deep in couch cushions and other "hiding places" for change to bring in. Don't be surprised if they offer to assist in cleaning out your car or house to find loose change.

Money can be returned any day this week to be counted and turned in to the office.
MEASUREMENT
Students have been discussing standard and non-standard measurement. Last Thursday they used paperclips to measure items. Below you can see pictures of them measuring things Friday with centimeter cubes and toothpicks.

HOMEWORK UPDATE
Last Friday you should have found a homework page and assignment in your child's folder. Please take a minute to look over this information. Each week, in addition to the reading log, there will be a single, additional assignment to reinforce classroom skills. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Keep reading and sending in those page totals!
Words of Wisdom
Our Instructional Coach, Sonja Abdelgawad, is working on a bulletin board for our main hallway. She is looking for encouraging words to post. Here is a message from her:
Thank you for helping!!
Do you have some words, quotes, pictures or messages that inspire you, or that you use to inspire others? Would you be willing to share?
You can print or write your message and give it to your teacher to staple up
You can email it and we can print or write it and put it up.
It can be any size, shape or color.
You can put your name on it if you'd like people to know what inspires you.
If you put up something that you'd like back, please be sure your name is on it so I can return it.
Thank you for helping!!
Send in your words of wisdom!!
No School Monday, January 18th for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
This week we are studying his life and ways to help us better understand why we have a day off to celebrate him.
Reading & Writing
We are currently working on parts of a story in reading (finding the main characters, setting, and big ideas), as well as singular and plural nouns. Additionally, we are working on writing and reading informational texts.
