A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
I hope your long weekend is off to a great start! I wanted to express my gratitude for all of your kindness over the last two weeks. Many of you know I ended up in the hospital for a few days before Thanksgiving battling a liver disease flare. After a few minor procedures, my liver is on the mend! Unfortunately, in the meantime, I also was diagnosed with shingles! Let's just say it's been an interesting few weeks!!
As always, in planned and unplanned absences, the students continued to receive many compliments about their behavior. It makes me so incredibly proud to work with each and every one them! Yesterday we had the opportunity to celebrate at our All School Assembly. Our three "Code Word" recipients were honored at this time. All three are very deserving and are a great representation of the amazing things happening in our classroom! Congratulations to Aanya, Ryan, and Lucia!
It's hard to believe that December is upon us and we just have a couple of weeks before Winter Break. It tends to be a very busy time both in school and out. We are going to do our best to keep it "business as usual" until the final days before our break. Thank you for helping to keep routines as normal as possible!
Enjoy your weekend!

A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week students worked on Mapping a "special place" and thinking of story ideas about that place. They then chose a small moment idea and wrote and wrote and wrote! Next week we will continue this process while focusing on what it means to be a STORYTELLER vs. a REPORTER. We will use Robert Munsch (one of my favorite authors) as inspiration. See video link below!
Content: The students did an AWESOME job on their MAP SKILLS test! I am so impressed with what they learned during our activities. I hope you had time to celebrate the amazing scores. It did come to my attention that the guest teacher had the students practice the WRONG placement of the Arctic Ocean on Wednesday during my absence, therefore many students got this question wrong. I did add points in my gradebook for those students who made this mistake. I apologize for that! I had so much fun listening to the students share their Island Map projects. Such amazing ideas and creativity! I hope this was a fun project for everyone. I appreciate your at-home support in making this a success.
Next week we will begin our first science unit on SOUND. We are fortunate to have an online science program called Mystery Science to guide us in hands-on explorations of our topics. I am excited to get started!
Reader's Workshop: What is a Character Trait? What are YOUR character traits? Are you kind and compassionate? Witty and sarcastic? Maybe outgoing or shy? Students will be analyzing characters in our read aloud, Appleblossum the Possum, to identify character traits. We will spend time identifying a character's words and actions and how that gives us clues as to what their traits are. Connections will be made to previously read books including Please Write in this Book, and The One and Only for Ivan.
MATH SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY
This week's SPOTLIGHT STRATEGY is...Standard Algorithm Subtraction!
We are THANKFUL for...YOU!
