Next year, how will you create a classroom that allows for inquiry and teaches kids organization? In order for kids to focus on their thinking, the classroom needs to be free of clutter and distractions. Walls and counter tops need to be ready for student work/projects. There shouldn't be anything hanging down from the ceiling. Trash should always be picked up and the floor ready for kids to sit, lay, and work.
This year as we made a big move away from worksheets, the classrooms got messier to make room for student work/projects. That was step one. Now we are ready for step two. In order for kids to be able to give their best efforts to thinking, their environment should be organized in a way that allows that to happen. Just as we want kids to math facts so they can spend brain power on problem solving, we also want their environments to allow their brain power to focus on thinking.
What are the fundamental classroom conditions that support creative thinking, inquiry, and problem solving? Start your engines. . .
