Adult & Community Education
Tuesday in the Know - January 23, 2018
Message from the leadership team.
While many of you know that Adult Education has amazing programs and instructors at our school sites, many don't know that we also have classes with amazing instructors and advisors at the Naples Jail Center (NJC). Our instructors and advisors at the NJC work with student inmates to help reduce recidivism by working on their GED and improving on basic skills. Another key part of the program at the NJC is the focus on employability skills and the Seven Habits on the Inside for successful reentry. This past summer Collier County Adult Education received a grant to expand our programs at the NJC. While we have had a slow start, we have recently had many great successes. With two new instructors, Glenn Herriman and Brooke Bond, we have been able to expand our services. Glenn is working during the day with students in our new class 22A and Brooke is working in the evenings with our female students. Student inmates while in our programs also have access to instructional technology. And while the technology may be an instant draw, student retention occurs only through the positive relationships we build with our students just like any other of our classes. Thanks to Hunter Sayers, when students at the jail are ready, they are able to take the GED test which occurs on a monthly basis. This is critical because passing the GED is the end goal and it is contagious among our students. Finally, no program is complete without a graduation and therefore our program at the jail also has a graduation with caps, gowns and tassels. As we continue to provide the many educational opportunities the main difference were making is reflected in our community.

- Alejandro A. for incorporating MOVEMENT activities into his class; and I know there are many more teachers using movement to engage their students!
- Sylvia R. for bringing her class into the computer lab to work on reading and listening skills.
- Marlene A. for delivering lessons that are both engaging and relevant.
- Adele S. was using repetition in her Beginning class so the students will retain what was taught.
Setting Goals
ESOL Instructor Resources
After this first week, everyone should be settled into their classes and knowing all their students names (looking at the "name tents" count!)
It's not to early to start thinking about the CASAS exam. I always think of the word BALANCE in teaching and in life! If you can balance the class with reading, listening, writing, and speaking along with CASAS test practice questions, you should have positive learning outcomes!
