MES NEWS FLASH
Kindergarten and Preschool Registration is April 5, 2018
Be sure to call school for an appointment!
Milan Elementary will hold registration for students beginning Kindergarten in the fall on Thursday, April 5th. If you have a child who will be five by August 1, we urge you to contact the school at 654-2922 to set up an appointment. (Please note that students currently in the Readiness Kindergarten program do not need to attend this registration session.)
This is also the date to register if you are interested in our new Pre-School Program for children who will be 4 years old by August 1. This program is replacing our Readiness Kindergarten program which has been discontinued due to funding. Space for this class is limited and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. This program will be very similar to our former Readiness Program but there will be a monthly fee in addition to some other possible changes. (For more information, please see below.)
Please do not feel that you have to wait for a birth certificate and/or immunization record before you register your child. You have until school starts to produce these documents. It is very important that we at least get your child registered and complete the screening process before August so we can order enough supplies and set up class rosters. Thanks!

We'd like to share some information about our new MES PRESCHOOL
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Our new MES Preschool is a community pre-kindergarten program open to any child who will be four years old by August 1, 2018. This unique preschool program, led by a state certified teacher, is a step above and beyond the usual preschool opportunities typically offered to four year olds. Our Pre-K class is designed to help your child bridge the gap between preschool or Headstart class and kindergarten. This curriculum-based program will provide your child with the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and beyond and will offer enriching, age-appropriate activities to meet your child’s academic, social, and physical needs. Students in our MES Preschool will have a noticeable advantage when they begin kindergarten.
PRESCHOOL SCHEDULE:
This class will meet all day, every day, Monday – Friday and will follow the regular school calendar including breaks, holidays, and weather related closings and delays. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. each day and your child will be given the option to eat breakfast here at school before beginning the daily activities. The schedule provides several opportunities for “brain breaks” including a morning recess, lunch break, afternoon rest time, afternoon recess and afternoon snack. Dismissal time is 2:54 p.m. every day except Wednesday when the day ends a half hour earlier at 2:24.
TUITION, FEES, ETC:
Initially there will be a $100 non-refundable registration fee to hold your spot in this size-limited (18) class. If your child completes the program, this fee will be applied to your last (May 15) tuition payment. Tuition payments of $200 each will be due on the 1st and 15th of each month of the school year (August-May) with the first payment being due August 1. Parents have the option of making payments as they are due, combining them into one monthly payment, paying by semester, or paying for the full year in one lump sum if they choose. MES prefers that payments me made by using a credit/debit card through the online EZ Pay System but payments may also be made in cash or by check. Once enrolled in this preschool program, the tuition amount is due regardless of the number of days the child actually attends. There will also be a fee for books, supplies, and the rental of an iPad. This fee was $190 for the 2017-18 school year and may be paid in installments if desired.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
All preschool students are eligible to apply for our lunch and book assistance program. Eligibility for this program is determined by federal income guidelines. At this time, financial assistance for tuition is not guaranteed but we are exploring several options that may allow us to offer tuition assistance based on an income scale similar to the lunch and book assistance program.
SCHOOL SECURITY:
All Milan Elementary School doors are shut and locked through the school day. Parents will need to enter the building through the front doors and ring the doorbell to be admitted to the building. Milan Community School Corporation has a full-time School Resource Officer on duty every day. He divides his time between the two buildings in addition to monitoring the building-wide camera security system with the help of the office staff.
MONITORING PROGRESS AND PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION:
At Milan Elementary, we believe good communication between school and parent is vital to a student’s success. Parent/Teacher Conferences are held early in October each year. In addition, students will receive a quarterly mid-term progress report and a “report card” at the end of each quarter. If a particular concern arises, the teacher will contact you speedily to discuss it. All MES teachers are very responsive to parent calls and/or emails and most share news frequently through their classroom Facebook pages and newsletters.
TRANSPORTATION:
At this time bus transportation is not offered. If there is enough interest expressed, the possibility of transportation to and from various pick-up points will be explored. (A small additional fee may be charged.) If that is not offered, parents will be responsible for providing transportation to and from school. When dropping off or picking up a student, parents are asked to use Lakeside Drive (at the bottom of the hill as you approach school from Hwy 101) and drop off or pick up the student at the side entrance. Staff members will be there to supervise students as they enter or exit the building.
MEALS AND SNACKS:
All MES students have the option of purchasing breakfast and/or lunch at school in addition to an afternoon snack. Currently, the cost for breakfast is $1.25 and lunch is $1.75. If a student chooses to bring a packed lunch, a carton of milk may be purchased for 25¢. Again, preschool students are eligible to apply for the income-based, federal lunch assistance program and, if qualified, meals may be free or the price reduced. All preschool students are offered an afternoon snack (not covered by the lunch assistance program) which includes a carton of milk and a food item; currently the fee is 75¢ per day.
NAPTIME:
All preschool students are required to have quiet time after lunch even if they do not actually sleep.
