Exceptional Teachers - Recognized
St. Mary's County Public Schools wants to recognize the exceptional teaching across the school system. On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, Dr. Smith announced at a Board of Education meeting a process by which SMCPS will spotlight the incredible work of our teachers. Parents, guardians, colleagues, and students can submit a nomination to let the system know who they see doing amazing work. Staff members will be recognized in the bi-weekly system newsletter, The Signal, and on the SMCPS.org website and social media.
If you would like to nominate a Fairlead Academy teacher for their outstanding effort during this time of online learning, please use the link below to complete the acknowledgement process.

Ms. Fabbri - Specatacular Special Education Teacher
Ms. Holyfield - Splendid Special Education Teacher
I was born the ninth of ten children in West Virginia and attended West Virginia University, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology and a master's degree in Special Education. I played basketball, volleyball, ran track, and received the National Scholar-Athlete Award in high school. While in college, I played on the volleyball team. I have taught school and coached, both school teams and league play, in Charles County, MD, and Charlotte, NC.
Currently, I live in Waldorf with my husband, Tracy, and my dog, Bella Mia. I love baking, traveling to tropical spots, gardening (flowers), and refurbishing furniture. My favorite holiday is Christmas, my favorite color is green, and my favorite place to hang out is the National Zoo! I have 27 nieces and nephews, and over 40 great-nieces and nephews, who all call me "Aunt K" and think I am the greatest aunt ever!

Students, Are You Shy? Are You Saying NO to Video?
Online learning has been challenging for both students and teachers. And our teachers really want to respect their students' choices and comfort levels on video. Your teachers, however, would really like the opportunity to get to know you and associate names and faces. It's hard to do that when a student's video is turned off. Can you imagine teaching a class and looking at a bunch of little black boxes on a screen? This is especially challenging when you are used to teaching a room filled with students.
So, the next time you take a really attractive selfie, or you make a Bitmoji that you find fun (that is appropriate), post it in your profile to give your teachers an idea of who they are working with. Your teachers will appreciate you for it!
We Need Your Help - Return to School Survey
Parents/Guardians, we need your help! As we begin planning for students to safely return to school, your input is essential.
We need to collect information about your wishes for your child/ children regarding their return to school, as well as your transportation needs.
If you have not already done so, please complete the Return to School Survey/ (En Español) for Fairlead Academy I. Please note that the school system will need you to fill out a survey for each school that you have students enrolled. (The surveys can also be found on each school's website.)

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous - The Definitions
Schoology allows for various methods of instruction, which student will experience during the first week of school. You may hear the terms synchronous and asynchronous learning, but what does that mean to students? Synchronous learning is when the teacher is teaching LIVE and in color on the screen and students are tuning in to learn directly. Asynchronous learning is when the student is working independently on their assigned work; they could be watching a Screencast or they may also be emailing their teacher for guidance or additional resources.
