Classroom Happenings
ELA: Mrs. Camden
In ELA this week we continued Greek and Latin Root work. This week’s root is Manu: hand. Grades for the Miss/Mitt quiz have been posted.
We continued our work with signposts. Students should be recognizing signposts as they read and making thinkbook entries that show their thinking around the signposts. Notes on each signpost should be glued in their thinkbooks for reference.Thinkbook entries can (and should) be revised. If students make a revision they should show it to me at an appropriate time if they want credit. Our summative assessment on the six signposts will be next week.
Just a reminder, students are required to read two books each month for the rest of the school year. They should be finished with both books for September and started on a new novel for October.
The book fair is here. Students were able to preview the book fair on Thursday and it will be open during conferences.
Additionally, I will be placing a Scholastic book order on Tuesday October 15th for anyone who prefers to order online.
If you’d like to donate books to our classroom library, we have wish-lists on Scholastic and Amazon. Thanks!
Science: Mr. Vorel
This week in Science we began our new design/build project. In this project, students will be working in groups of 3 or 4 to construct an arcade game built mainly from cardboard. Students will also include at least one complete circuit within their game. For example, a group might decide to build a scaled down version of a skee-ball game where getting the ball into the hole completes a circuit and a light comes on. At the end of the project, students from some of our Webster elementary schools will come to Hixson and play with the games the science students created.
Some of the materials we will use to complete this project include: cardboard, duct tape, electrical tape, and batteries. Students will also be using old holiday lights and toy parts in their arcade games. We would gladly accept any donation you of old holiday lights, games/toys, tape, or cardboard.
As grades are being placed into SIS, please note that if an assignment has a comment of incomplete, your student should revise and resubmit their work. I am happy to work with any student who would like individualized help during lunch or before/after school.
Social Studies: Mr. McGinnis
This week in Social Studies we are finishing up with the review of the causes of the American Revolution. We will dissect the Declaration of Independence and its greater significance in the world today.
