Springing into Easter

Head Teacher Newsletter 4th April 2022

Big picture

It's a jam-packed newsletter for the last week of this term, with lots of news and photos.

This Friday (8th April) is a PD Day, so the last day in school for children is Thursday.

Also reminders that Monday 2nd May is the early Spring Bank Holiday and that Bardwell will be taking its discretionary Bank Holiday for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee on Friday 27th May.

While you have your diary out, also note that class and whole school photographs (and Y6 Leavers' photo) will be taken on Wednesday 18th May - a change from the date previously given to you. Please ensure your child(ren) are in smart school uniform that day, and have their colourful sweatshirt with them.

We hope you all have a wonderful Easter and enjoy the inevitable chocolate overload!

Ukraine fundraising grand total = £138

Thank you to everyone who contributed and to Oak Class for making and selling their beautiful lino-printed cards.

New menu for School Lunches

Please see the new menus on the School Meals page of the website.

At Bardwell, our cook trials the new Vertas EATS menu for a couple of rotations and then may make changes to the menu based on pupil feedback. If she makes changes, we will circulate an amended menu in due course.

Please note that your child can opt for a jacket potato on any day - they just need to let their class teacher know at registration. You can also opt for your child to have sausages instead of fish on Fridays - if you'd like this, please let one of the office staff know.

Hazel Class - portraits with the family

Hazel Class pupils welcomed their families in this week to continue their work on 'Who Do You Think You Are' portraiture and family trees. Pupils had decided where and how they wanted to photograph their families. Visitors could also view the pupils' exhibition of painted portraits, which are inspired by Andy Warhol.

Oak Class Zoology Live Learning

This story was written by Oscar T, one of our pupil journalists.

Tuesday 29th March 2022

Today Oak Class had a Google Meet with the Zoology Museum in Cambridge. We had a lot of fun. Did you know Charles Darwin was not a good student and he had a beetle collection?

Pippa said, "I really loved it and I would love to do it again".

We learned Charles Darwin was more interested in mockingbirds than finches while he was at the Galapagos Islands.

After the Google Meet we looked at some skulls and their main features, then drew them.

I was very impressed by your students – with their curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject, they were lovely to work with. Dr Roz Wade from the Zoology Museum, Cambridge.

The image below was selected by Oscar - it shows a rhino skeleton at the Museum and you can see the class in the small window, bottom right!

Silver Birch Class - printmaking

More lovely feedback from Katie, the printmaker:

"Thank you so much to everyone at the school for making me feel so welcome and for launching in to the workshops with such enthusiasm! It was great to work with all those fabulous young artists."

Rowan Class welcome customers to Harry's Cafe

The children made invitations, menus, the food out of playdoh, poured drinks, created a security team at the entrance to the cafe, made toys for the table, decided on music for the event, made place cards, took payment with paper money they made and waved off their guests with a wonderful thank you and goodbye!

After School Club - cancellation of Thursday sessions & new themes

It is with regret that we have to cancel the Thursday sessions of our After School club provision, after Easter. Gipping Valley Sports Partnership have an ongoing shortage of suitable instructors and at present, they can't provide an instructor. We have looked into alternatives from a commercial provider but, given the usual numbers that attend, we would need to charge a high fee for each session, c. £15-20 per pupil.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The themes after Easter will be:

  • Monday - Forest Fun with Mr Hurkett
  • Tuesday - Football with Mr Hurkett
  • Wednesday - Summer Sports (e.g. athletics, rounders) with Gipping Valley & Thurston Sports Partnership.

As always, please book your place in advance via Arbor (bookings will open this weekend) and let us know if you need to cancel so that we can free up the space for another pupil.

Thank you,

Mrs Allman

PTA - news & dates for your diary

Foolish Friday - thank you for all the chocolate donations, and well done for the kooky costumes and crazy hairstyles!

Cake Sale at the end of school on Thursday 7th April - this time it's Oak Class pupils' turn to make/buy cake and bring them into school that morning. All children/parents/carers/staff can then bring in money to buy in the afternoon.

Easter Raffle - tickets will be on sale in the last week of term. Please buy lots of tickets!

Sale Trail - Saturday 30th April, 10am-2pm. Please come along to browse and buy at this event, or run a stall to clear out your clutter! Pitches are £5, the trail map is a 50p minimum donation. Contact us on bardwellpta@gmail.com to book your pitch - before 22/04 to be included on the map. There will be a small number of pitches available at the School for those who aren't resident in Bardwell.

Baby & Toddler Group

It was great to welcome some parents to the Baby & Toddler Group last week. Attending a social group like this can help extend/build social networks for all those who've had a baby during the pandemic and had limited opportunities to meet with other families. Also, it's a great way for any September YR starters to meet the little people that will become their classmates!

The group will meet in the School Hall on Thursdays from 1.30pm, so we'd love it if you came along with your pre-school age child.

Holiday Activities Fund (HAF) activities

From Hana Richardson/Will Wright, Families and Communities team at West Suffolk Council.

The Department for Education has committed three more years of funding to the HAF (Holidays Activity Fund) initiative, which predominately aims at supporting our most vulnerable families and children. Those on free school meals, pupil premium or where there is an identified need outside of these criteria can apply for free holiday activities and healthy food at a range of venues and offers across the district.

The scheme is kicking off in 2022 with another full schedule in the West for the Easter holidays, and will go on to include a full Summer and Christmas programme also.

We have even more providers working with us this year and offers include:

All of these offers include healthy lunches and snacks throughout the day. The Family Park Cooking days include a food parcel for families to take away at the end of session, with fresh food and recipe cards to feed a family of four for a week.

To see a full schedule of dates and event details on offer across West Suffolk see the attached table.
