Getting to Know Gwen
What is your role at Hubbs? How long have you been at Hubbs?
I teach College Yes and Communication C to high-level Hubbs Center students. I have been teaching at Hubbs Center since 2009.
How did you learn about/ come to Hubbs?
Initially, I wasn't planning on working with adults. I planned to teach ELL in the K-12 schools. Before my kids were born, I taught in Montessori schools.
When my children were little, I stayed home with them while going to graduate school to become licensed in K-12 education at Hamline University. For fun, I took a class about teaching English to adults. I volunteered at a few different adult schools in the Twin Cities. When I came to Hubbs Center, I fell in love with the school. I knew I had to change my classes and complete the Adult Licensure at the University of Minnesota, instead. I knew that Hubbs Center was a special place.
What is your favorite part about working at Hubbs?
My favorite part about working at the Hubbs Center is getting to know the students. The students make the school a wonderful place (both in person and online).
I don't always get it right, but I try very hard to please our amazing students. I imagine myself as a student, and I put together materials that I hope our learners will enjoy and benefit from.
I not only enjoy being a teacher at Hubbs Center. I also enjoy being a student. Hubbs Center students have taught me so many things about life, the United States, and the world.
What does your typical day look like?
This year, I am teaching all of my classes online from home. I teach College Yes at 9:30 and Communication C at 11:30. I do some work in the afternoons. Sometimes, I have meetings, too. I usually take a break for a few hours. Then I go back online again to teach College Yes from 5:30-7:30. I usually do a little work after class, and then I relax for an hour or two.
What do you like to do outside of Hubbs?
Outside of teaching, I like to spend time with my husband and our dogs. Together we are usually quite busy with our four adult children and our extended families. My youngest is currently in college. Two of our adult children will get married next summer.
I also enjoy playing French horn in community orchestras in the Twin Cities. I hope to do more of this next year.
What advice do you have for the students here?
I would give students the same advice that I gave my own children. Be sure to enjoy learning, even when it's difficult. My philosophy is that teachers are not in charge of students' learning. Teachers provide materials and help guide students, but students are in charge of their own learning. Learn the way that makes you interested and excited and happy. Your learning belongs to you. Take pride in doing it your way so that your learning is special and meaningful to you.
