Conferences are sneaking up on us! They will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 4:30-8:00 pm and on Monday, Nov. 25 from 8:00 am-8:00 pm. If you haven't signed up yet for a conference, please do so by accessing your Home Access Center account and selecting Power PTC. If you are having trouble connecting to your HAC, please contact the main office for help. If you do not see a time slot that works for your schedule, please contact me so that we can arrange an alternate time to meet.
We have been working on some digital projects here at school that we would like to share with you at conferences! FlipGrid is a video tool that helps students create and share short videos in class. If you have time, please download the FlipGrid app from your app provider. I will be sure to have an extra device available at conferences if you do not have access.
HOME INTERNET ACCESS
With winter making an early appearance, it is time to start thinking about Snow Days. This year, IPSD 204 has implemented what is called E-Learning Days. This will allow the district to reduce the number of make-up days at the end of the year by having students complete educational activities at home in the event of a snow/cold day. Please let me know if you do not have internet access at home so that alternate arrangements can be made.
Students have been performing all four basic operations using negative numbers and absolute value over the last few weeks. Currently, we are applying what we have learned about positive and negative numbers to the coordinate grid. Ask your student if he/she can explain how a point or a shape on the grid can be reflected over the x or y axis!
We are about halfway through our 2nd Quarter anchor text: The Liberation of Gabriel King. It is a powerful story about friendship and courage. It takes place in the summer of 1976 and touches on the concepts of racism and facing your fears. I encourage you to check it out and discuss it with your 5th grader!
